elections on the rearmament issue
There is no sign yet when or if
this call will be heeded. But even
if it is not. Chancellor Adenauer's
Christian Democratic government
it certain to be considerably em
barrassed by the new turn of
events.
Adenauer is already openly com
mitted to a policy of remilitarizing
Western Germany. Rut he can
hardly do anything about it in the
face of such obvious popular senti
ment against it. Unlets this trend ii
somehow interrupted or reversed,
his hands will be tied indefinitely.
And that makes German rearm
ament a question strictly for the
professors. For, plainly, a German
army will not be created aganst
the will of the German people.
French opposition to a remil
itarized Germany was bad enough,
hut this is worse. There was al
usys the feeling that if the
situation grew critical. France
ttould yield and approve German
defense units. Nobody is coming
up with any bright ideas, however,
about how to cope with resistance
within Germany itself.
The issue isn't one which can be
quietly shelved for a later day.
Russia has been welding the so
called "police force" in East Ger
many into an effective army. Its
own armies in East Germany and
elsewhere hold a commanding ad
vantage in both manpower and
weapons over anything the West
can muster in Europe (except the
atomic bomb).
It has been recognized for many
months that a European defense
force without sizable German units
