Girls Who Lost
Dad In War Get
Korean Sympathy
C0LLINGDALE, Fa. UP)
Two little girls, whose father wrote
uie now famous "Dear Joannie
and Roaemarie" letter, have re
ceived another bit of mail they pro
Da bly will cherish In th years
to come.
A letter of sympathy and IM
contributed by nine Koreans were
presented to the widow of Private
First Class John J. McCormick.
McCormick wrote to his daugh
ters, Rnsemarie, aix, and Joannie,
three, ahortly before he was killed .
in action last August 10. In th.
letter, which reached the children
September 14, he explained he was
fighting so his loved ones could
live in peace.
On September 30. nine Koreans
sppesred st the Tokyo, office of
Newsweek msganne and said they
wanted to let Mrs. McCormick
know "there are good snd decent
people in Korea ai well as bad
ones."
F.xolainM that thev wished the
ISO to go toward the children's edu
cation, the Koreans wrote:
'As your brave husband said in
that letter there are many bad
people who bring misery and de
struction to humanity. However,
we should like to tell you that
there are a great many good and
courageous people, of which Mr.
McCormick was certainly an out
standing example. It is the effect
of these good people and under his
guidance that keeps the world go
ing in spite nf the evil done by
had people. This ir hut one reason
for our trust in God.
"We sre a group of Korean evae
uea who tr to be good Koreans.
We deeply regret that the bad
people your husband fought to his
death were Koreans. As good and
loyal Koreans, we are tryint to do
our share for the cause of human
happiness snd world brotherhood
the same cause for which your
valiant husband laid down his life
on the Koresn front."
In sccepting the letter from a
representative nf Newsweek, Mrs.
Mctormick said:
"I hold no resentment against
the Korean people for the awAil
death of my children's father. Free
people fight because they believe
something is right. The only re
sentment I hold is toward the Com
munist leader, Stalin, who has
Usage Of Rubber
Restricted By
Federal Order
WASHINGTON lP) The Na
tional Production authority Friday
tightened up its limitations on
rubber to restrict tire and rubber
companies to approximately what
they used before fighting broke
out in Korea.
The new order limits natural
rubber usage to 75 percent and
tola) consumption (including syn
thetic) to 84 per cent, of the new
rubber used in the year preceding
June 30.
However, because of adjust
ments granted to the rubber com
paniea in special appeala ca,ses,
NPA officials said the result will
be to limit the concerns to approxi
mately their average monthly
usage in the base year.
Karl W. Glen, chief of the NPA
rubber division, said the propor
tion of anythetic rubber in tirea
will increase without "any par
tirular quality deterioration," and
the number of tires produced
should be approximately tha
same as in the year ended last
Jvrne 30. Officials have aaid pre
viously that they expect no short
sue of tires.
The order directs that no plant
shall use in November more tha
75 percent of the tonnage of
natural rubber consumed in th.
base year. In December a limit
of 83 percent on natural ia pro
vided. The aim Is to make available
natural rubber for the defense
stockpile. Rut because of the ap
peal machinery, 1h rubber corn-
1 panics will get about 52.000 tons
