Rev. Fowler Dies
Of Heart Attack

Rev. Steven Bryant Fowler. 78,
retired pastor of The Church of
the Open Bible, died Wednesday,
Oct. 18, of a heart attack while

He was making his home wan a
son, Steve Fowler, 20.17 Catherine
Ave., Roseburg, at the time of
his death.
He waa born Dec. 3, 1873 In Ohio
and had been living here for the
past nine months.
Surviving are his wife, Mar
garet, Everett, Wash.; two daugh
ters, Mrs. Elwood Vaughan, Ev
erett Wash, and Mrs. Gordon Sill,
Des Moines, Wash.; two sons, Steve
Fowler, Roseburg, and Johnnie
Fowler, New York City; two sis-
ters, Mrs. Stanley Wood, Chicago
and Mrs. Archie Walker, Portland,
and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in '
the Chapel of the Roses, Roseburg
Funeral home. Monday, Oct. 23. at i
2 p.m. with Rev. Clarence Ander-
son officiating. Interment will fol-
low in the Masonic cemetery.

ific line at East Gardiner. Two
plans have been proposed. One will
he selected after the bida have
been made.
The plans call for either an over
pass or a grade crossing at high
way 101 near the Smith river
bridge. If the overpass is selected,
a span of approximately 109 feet
will be required. This span would
be constructed nf steel resting on
concrete. Dirt fill and piling would
he used to connect with the steel
span.
The railroad will he an aid to
the present I-nng Bell mill at Gar
diner. This mill is located on the
Umpqiia river and has deep water
facilities to Ihe ocean, hut does
not hsve a railroad installation.
A complaint sworn out by the
FBI accused Schmidt of embez
zling S9352 from the account of
a Wenatchee customer, Josephine
Buck.
Schmidt was manger of the
branch bank from 1945 until about
one month ago. He had been em
ployed at the bank since' 1939.

of 500 pounds of pearls including
15.000 necklaces valued at SI,

pan. It is believed to have been the
largest shipment of pearls ever to
enter the country. The pearls, the
combined output of several hundred
growers in the Dutch East Indies
and Japan were inspected under
guard by U. S. custom officials.
