In this country the money supply
is at a new peak. A spurt in bank
credit part to finance expanding
industrial activity, part to under
write consumer credit and Instal
ment paper hat sent the volume
of bank deposits and money in
the hands of individuals to 1171,1
billion, an all-time high, the Fed
eral Reserve board reports.
This was a gain of $1.4 billion
since the war started, and a jump
of 1700 million in the month of
August. The board says only $100
million of the August gain was in
currency in people's pockets. De
mand deposits ro.se $900 million.
From this total gain of $1 billion
the board deducts a fall in time
deposits of $200 million and in pos
tal savings deposits of $100 million.
Draw On Savings
This see sawing of deposits,
credit, savings and money appar
ently gives another indication that
people have been dipping into their
savings to buy consumer goods.
The rise in demand deposits is due.
among other things, to the msh of
money through the channels of
trade as buying increased all along
the line from retail stores to sup
pliers of raw materials. It is also
due to reflects the money banks
lent corporations to finance this
trade and production.
The Securities and F.xchange
commission notes that this same
drop in savings was well underway
before the war. Reporting on the
months of April. May and June,
SEC finds that Americans were
saving $200 million less in "liquid"
savings than in the tame months
of 1949.
The contrast with prewar yean
wat even more striking. In the
first half of this year Americans
were saving in "liquid" form only
one percent of income after taxes,
but in 1940 they were saving al
most six percent. SEC defines
"liquid" savings as currency and
bank deposits, equity in savings
j and loan associations, insurance.
