HIGHT0WER WASHINGTON I.T) Russia apparently is preparing to write Dff the crumbling Communist cam paign in South Korea as an incident of no importance. That is the view of the best informed American officials. Thev say the Soviet position is not com pletely nrm yet but is clearly tin- ping toward acceptance of the Red setback in that area. But the Russian attitude toward Northern Korea may be dramatic ally different. There is a strong, belief here that the Soviet forces or possibly Chinese Communist troops may occupy the countrv north of the 38th parallel for the express purpose of keeping peace but actually to prevent United Na tions forces from gettiiv? close to Russian security areas like Vladi vostok and the Manchurian border. Ever since the United Nations landings near Seoul there has been, in the opinion of State department experts, a gradual change in Rus sian propaganda on the Korean war. It gets less time on the Mos cow radio. It is given a more mod erate nandting. in the last few days, for example, the Russians mildly commented that the landings were a sign of weakness in an effort to save face on the part of the United States. Soviet Foreign Minister Vishin- sky made a speech in the U. N. general assembly last week which officials here regard as having been less viciously hostile toward the United States than other re cent Russian speeches. The rare, or noble, cases are the elements helium, neon, argon. krypton, zenon and radon, all of which are chemically inert. Airplane and engine me chanics are urgently needed at McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma, Wash., if the Korean air lift is to continue to supply the critical needs of United Nations forces in the Far East. Colonel T. Alan Bennetf. com manding officer at McChord, made that statment here in his latest appeal for civilian employees trained in any phase of aircraft maintenance. "The success of United Nations forces fighting in Korea depends to a large extent on the Korean airlift." Colonel Bennett said, "and the success of the airlift depends on aircraft mechanics. The need is so urgent that failure to obtain the needed mechanics could iously impair the operation of the lilt, causing too little to arrive too late at the Korean battle front. Indefinite civil service appoint ments await accepted applicants entitling them to all the usual gov ernment benefits. Employees work a six-day week with time-and-a-half for work over 40 hours per week, as well as 10 to 15 percent extra compensation for night work Persons qualified in any phase of aircrau maintenance are urged to contact the civilian personnel of- nce at McChord AFB or their nearest state employment office.
