lowing Gen. George C. Marshall
to become secretary of defense.
The White House said Marshall's
formal nomination to the post

Presidential Secretary Charles
G. Ross said Marshall has asked
that he be sworn into office at the
Pentagon without any special cere
mony. He can't take the oath,
ot course, until the cnate approves
him or before Louis Johnson sieps
out as defense secretary tomorrow.
Ross said Mr. Truman also
signed a bill authorizing him to
appoint Gen. Omar N. Bradley to
be the permanent five star rank
of general of the army.
