sleeps days or tries to.
His landlady, Mildred Hodson,
who lives in tne other halt of a
duplex, has a piano.
Murrav has found that Morpheus
and Orpheus don't collaborate. So
he took some sleeping tablets
home from the hospital, to give
Morpheus a break. ,
When they didn't work, Murray
told police later, he tried kero
sene poured it on the roof and
touched a match to it. "1 was
going to burn the house down, and
the piano too," the officers quoted
him.
The fire department arrived too
quickly for his plan to succeed.
Police booked him on suspicion
of attempted arson, after detour
ing by an emergency 'hospital to
get the pills pumped out.

work.
Andrew Boehm arrived at a fire
house last night with his dog, Shep.
The Shepherd, who said he rad
worn out eight pairs of socks and
three pairs of shoes in his cross
country hike, was crestfallen to
learn there are few calls. (or sheep
herders in the Philadelphia area.
Boehm said he had hoped to find
a job here so that he could cam
money for a trip to Germany to
visit his mother. Despite the pes
simitic report of job openings, he
said he will make an effort to
locate work.

The Rev. Mr. Houston was asso
ciate pastor of Calvary Baptist
church at Salem before going to
India. He is a nephew of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Houston, Oregon City.
The convention office reported
none of its 47 missionaries in India
was injured by the quake but that
property damage was high.

Tax On Transient
Logs Upheld By
Supreme Court
SALEM (;P The slate su
preme court ruled Tuesday that
Hood river ' county may levy a
$8,449 tax on some Washington
state log rafts which were mooted
temporarily in the Columbia river
in that county.
The logs. 64 rafts of them, were
owned by Stebco Incorporated, a
company which hauls its logs down
the river from Underwood ana
Lyle, Wash., to its mill five miles
west of Vancouver, Wash.
On Jan. 1, 1947, the annual prop
erty assessment date, the logs
were temporarily in Hood River
county, so the county sheriff slaped
oft the lax.
The company sued the sheriff.
claiming that the county had no
right to tax property moving in
interstate commerce.
Circuit Judge M. W. Wilkinson
of Hood River ruled in favor of the
company.
But Tuesday decision by Justice
George Rossman reversed him, and
ordered the tax paid.
In another case, the supreme
court ruled that the state gets
the $15,000 estate of Mrs. G. V
Crusan Sr., who was killed with
rer husband in an automobile ac
cident on the Santiam highway
near Cascadia.
Their bodies were found the day
after the accident. Mr. Crusan had
a son and daughter, who claimed
that Mrs. Cruson died first, and
that they thus were entitled to the
estates of both their father and
Mrs. Crusan.
But the state sued, claiming
Mrs. Crusan's estate because she
had no heirs. The Linn county
circuit court ruled in favor of the
son and daughter,
Tuesday's decision by Justice
Rossman reversed the lower court.
It held that tinder a 1947 law, both
are presumed to have died at the
same time, and that each estate
is separate.
The decision thus gives Mrs
Crusan's estate to the state, and
Mr. Crusan's to the heirs.

Mcidt, 50, Toledo, died in Lake

to keep alive.
He beat off sharp-billed sen gulls
as the cold water numbed his
arms. Then artillery from the Erie
ordnance depot firing range
opened up with practice shots, and
shells fell in the water near the
33-year-old Toledo man.
Finally two fishermen picked up
Navarre about seven miles oil
shore from the ordnance depot,
near Port Clinton, O.
Navarre, a truck driver, told his
rescuers:
"ft was a terrible experience.
They'll never get me out on that
lake again."

Two young sisters were slain last

walking near their home at the
