Home From Trip Mr. and

evening from a two-week trip

allowed to play 'The Volga Boat
man'? Let people go to Russia
if they wish to hear the slave

DRIVER PENALIZED
Jack Randall Buffum, 21 of Red
mond, was given a sentence of
five days, following his appearance
in the Sutherlin Justice court on
a charge of driving with a sus
pended operator's license, reported
Justice of the Peace Ward C. Wat
son. Buffum was arrested by state
police.

Mrs. J. S. Lcsswell
Of Yoncalla Dies
Jennie Smith Lasswell died at
her home in voncalla Monday.
She was born May 25, 1868, in
Pennsylvania, coming to Oregon
43 years ago. She has lived in the
Yoncalla and Oakland communtiea
for the last 31 years.
She is survived by two sons,
Sidney and Avery; one sister and
one brother, four grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday at 10:30 a.m. . at the
Yoncalla Methodist church. Vault
entombment will be at the River
side cemetery mausoleum in Port
land. Arrangements are by Stearns
mortuary, Oakland.

ukawa received two notices Mon
day: One said his son, Sgt. Fred Y.
Furukawa, serving with the 24th
infantry division in Korea, has
been awarded the bronze star med
al for heroic achievement nn July
6 near Pyongtaek. Fred led a
machinegun section to safety from
an enemy trap.
The second notice said that
another son, Sgt. Iaac Furukawa,
had been killed in action In Korea.
There were no deta'ls.
Both were World War II vet
erans. Canyonville-Days Creek
Pastor Dates Services
Frank Harvey, recently ap
pointed pastor of the Canyonville
and Days Creek Methodist
churches, held his initial services
Sunday, Aug. 20, at both places.
The new pastor is from Ashland
and expects to drive back and forth
until Sept. 1. at which time he will
move into the parsonage at Can
yonville. He plans to be married
Oct. 28.
Rev. Mr. Harvey will preach
at 10 a.m. at Days Creek and at
11 at Canyonville. He plans to al
ternate the 'hours every three
months.
Heart Attack Fatal To
Field Worker At Winston
Seth E. H. Tobyne, 59, resident
of this community for the last eight
months, died suddenly August 21,
of a heart attack while work
ing in a field in the Winston district.
He was a former resident of Port
land. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Marie
Marrion, Portland.
Funeral services will be held
August 25 in the Mt. Scott Funeral
home, Inc., Portland. Local ar
rangements are in care of the
Roseburg Funeral home.
Shoplifter Found With
Fortune In His Pockets

MOB DISPERSED

county said a mob of about 300
persons was dispersed In front of
the jail here late last night after
two shots were fired.
Inside the jail was 40-year-old
Carl Walters, who la charged with
murder in the twin-slaying of two

Federal Judge Black Of
Seattle Passes Away
SEATTLE CP) U. S. District
Judge Lloyd L. Black, 61, died to
day in Swedish hospital. He was
stricken while watching an outdoor
swim show Sunday and underwent
an emergency operation Monday.
It was the first day the widely
known jurist had missed from the
federal bench because ot mness
in 11 years.

tion department has told every
Oreeon public school that tncy
should have consistent plans for
impriving themselves over a period
of years.
The department said it is revising
school standards, which schools
must meet in order to get help
from the state basic school support
fund.

Veteran, Passes
Walter Vashaw, 62, veteran of
World War I, died at his home
on Mulholland drive Aug. 22 after
a short illness. He was born Dec,
11,1887, in Michigan and came to
Roseburg 22 years ago. He was a
member of the Eagles lodge and
of the Roseburg American Legion
post.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs.
Lind House, San Francisco; three
sisters, Mrs. Wm. Beaudoin, Royal
Oak, Mich.: Miss Alice and Miss
Emma Vashaw, both of Leance
Mich., and a brother, Fred, also
of Leance.
Funeral services will be held in
The Chapel of The Roses, Rose
burg Funeral home. Friday, Aug.
25, at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Feller
and the American Legion in
charge. Interment will follow in
the Masonic cemetery with full
military honors.

Funeral services for Eldred Ken
neth Hoodcntyle, Rt. 1, Drain ,who,
according to officers, died of a
gunshot wound Sunday, will be
held Frday at 2 p.m. at the Chris
tain church in Drain.
Military rites will be performed
by the Drain post of the American
Legion.
Mr. Hoodentyle was born at Gas
ton, Ore., Jan. 14, 1913 and lived
in the Drain community for the
last 22 years, except for the time
spent in the army in the Pacific
theater.
Surviving are his widow, Sheila;
a son, Ivan; a daughter, Sharon:
Irs father and mother, Mr. and
Mrs. J. P. Hoodentyle of Gaston;
four brothers, and five sisters.
Stearns mortuary is in charge of
arrangements.

Girls Drum Corps Dated !
At All-Star Grid Game
The Knights of Pythias ' Girls
Drum and Bugle corps will be in
Portland this weekend to partici
pate in pre-game and halftime ac
tivities Saturday at the Shriners
hospital all-sta- football game.
The unit is composed of 38 Rose
burg high school girls under the
direction of Bill Black. It won a I
first place honor at the Rose Fes-
tival in Portland last June. An !
exhibition was given at the fair-1
grounds July 4.
The game will start at 8:30 p.m.
in Multnomah stadium.
In all, 33 units will participate
in the events. The bands and units
will march into the stadium, being
