Scheduled For Thursday
Funeral services for Rex Beach
Mitchell, 38, who died suddenly
Aug. 17 while at work on the new
Baptist church building, will be
held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Mt.
Vernon, Wish. The body was ship
ped lo Mt. Vernon by the Rose
burg Funeral home.
Mr. Mitchell was born Feh. 21,
1912 in Springtown, Ark., and had
lived in Oregon two years. During
World War II he was in the mar
ines. Surviving are a brother, Ira
Mitchell, Seattle, Wash., and a sis
ter, Mrs. Ona Allen, Everett, Wash.
Interment will be in the Odd
Fellows cemetery, Mt. Vernon.

administration hospital in Rose

deal with patients who will be re
turning to their homes and placei

been found to be helpful in rehabil
itating mental patients.

The ministers of Roseburg will
provide housing for visiting minis
ters of ihcir denominations as well
as denominational dinners for all
groups represented. About 100
minister have already signified
their intention of attending, with
more to be contacted.
The program is being sponsored
jointly by the Veterans adminis
tration hospital and the Roseburg
Ministerial association, with Chap
lain Albert feller in charge of ar
rangements. Programs for the
conierence can be obtained oy
writing the Roseburg Veterans
hospital.
Sportmsmen Hold Annual
Picnic At Cleawox Lake
The second annual exchange pic
nic between the Umpqua Basin
Conservation council and the
Southwestern Oregon Sportsmen's
association was held Sunday a t
Camp Cleawox on the Oregon
coast.
Among those present were C.'C.
Schcnck of Portland, president of
the Columbia River Sportsmen's
council, and officials and mem
bers of the Southwestern Oregon
group. Attending from Roseburg
were Carl Hill, chairman of the
game commission; James Vaughn,
district director of fish and game
management; Bruce Yeagcr and
Charles dinger. .
The host group served coffee and
clam chowder and participants
brought potluck dishes. Afternoon
activities included a trap shoot
and exchange of conservation and
game views. !
The first such exchange picnic
was held last year at the Rose
burg Rod and Gun club grounds.
The annual picnics are open to
the public.
Minerva A. DeGree Dies
Following Brief Illness
Minerva A. DeGree, 64, resident
of Wincher'cr for seven years, died
Aug. 19 after a short illness. She
was born Oct. 24, 1885, in Ger
manlown, Penn. She was a com
municant of St. George's Episco
pal church.
Surviving are her husband,
Vince, Winchester; a daughter,
Miss Lillian DeGree, Winchester;
three sisters: Mrs. Lavina Aufdcr
'Heide, Rogers, Ark.; Mrs. Alica
Brandon, Covina, Calif., and Mrs.
Lucy Houser, Covina, Calif.
Funeral services will be held in

at 10 a.m., with Father Alfred S.
Tyson officiating. Interment will
follow in the Masonic cemetery.

Robert Boshford Given
Boy Scout Finance Post
Robert Bashford, above, has
been appointed finance chairman
for the Douglas county district of
the Boy Scouts of America.
Bashford. a former Boy Scout,
automatically becomes a member

committee. He will coordinate fi
nancial policies and fund-raising
Scouts.
Bashford succeeds Al Henninger,
now district Boy Scout chairman.
The Boy Scouts are expected to
be active this year because of a

Bashford was head of a com
mittee which handled business so
licitation for the polio drive lat
year. He is a member of the Ki
wanis, Elks and the chamber of

M. H. "Bill" Rogers or his wife,

The Rogers are believed to have
been in Roseburg about two
months, coming here from Pilot
Rock. Rogers is believed to be
employed as a "cat" skinner in

Six Vagrancy Cases
Occupy Municipal Court
Three women were being held
in the county jail today each on
$750 bail, according to Justice of
Peace A. J. Geddes. The three
were charged with vagrancy.
They are Ruby Kelly, 34, and
Dolly Carr, 35, both of Reed sport
and Judy L. Anderson, 25, of Port
land. The women were arrested
Sunday at Reedsport by deputies
and reserves of the sheriff's of
fice. Two vagrancy charges were filed
also against John Edward Water
man, 35, of Corvallis and Leonard
A. Van Horn, 43 of Butte, Mont.,
reported Sheriff O. T. Carter. The
two mer were arrested by the
state police.
John Martin Tuttle, 19, of Rose
burg was also charged with vag
rancy and released on $50 bail pay
ment, .said Geddes. Tuttle was ar
rested by the state police.
Two Minor Fires Are
Brought Under Control
A 50-acre fire on the Herman
Oden place at Dodson mountain
was burnirfg itself out today after
being brought under control, the
Douglas Forest Protective assoc
iation reported.
The fire had been brought under
control after it had fed on grass,
brush and logging slash.
Another fire destroyed an o I d
barn belonging to a Mr. Slear"
near the Hinkle creek station of
the association. The fire spread
out over an acre of grass but was
brought under control.
The barn was located across
the Calapooia river from the Io
nian fire station. Fire fighters
speculated that the fire may have
been started by children playing
with matches because a half-full
box of matches was found near
the barn. '

Mr. Truman did not ask for auth
