Swimming Meet
Program Rapidly
Nears Completion
Plans for the second annual
Southern Oregon Invitationsl swim
ming meet, to be held in Roseburg
Aug. 11 and 12, are rapidly near
ins completion, announced meet
chairman Walt Brittell.
The sponsoring Junior Chamber
of Commerce urge., townspeople
who have rooms available to house
visiting swimmers to contact the
Chamber of Commerce office,
phone 78, and leave their names,
addresses and numbers of avail
able beds for the out of town
participants.
It is anticipated 200 swimmers,
representing the foremost athletic
clubs in the Northwest, will be
here for the meet. The Oregon
AAU sanctioned swimming results
will be enlered as the official AAU
records of this vear.
The Junior Chamber sponsored
a similar function last year, and
this meet promises to be even
better, the committee announces.
Already several swimming
groups have released tentative
lists of participants and a big turn
out of the best swimmers of this
area is indicated.
Also scheduled to appear in ex
hibition is Al Palnik, former div
ing star and Olympl. champion,
of Seattle. Patnik -vill bring with
him water clowns, who usually add
spice to this sort of show. A local
water ballet is also being trained
to present a feature attraction.
It is very important that towns
people rth available rooms con
tact the chamber, announced hous
ing chairman Rod Dodson. These
out of town swimmers are paying
their own expenses, except lodg
ing, and an appeal is made to
Roseburg residents to provide
lodging for them. No meals are
required, as th swimmers are
under strict diets.

young men that the choice of
service among the various branch
es of the army is given only to
volunteers and that draftees do
not have any choice of service.
Volunteers who enlist in the army
for a period of three years or
more may choose to serve in the
airborne, armored cavalry, chem
ical corps, coast artillery corps,
corps of engineers, corps of mili
tary police, field artillery, infan
try, medical department ordnance,
quartermaster corps, signal corps,
transportation corps and may also
enlist for assignment to the Far
East. In addition, many volunteers
re eligible for schooling and tech
nical training.
"The work of the Selective Ser
vice is to provide young men to
fill vacant positions," said M-Sgt.
Grimm "Therefore, their personal
wishes with regard to type and
place of service cannot be con
sidered I advise all young men of
draft age who wish to make a
choice of service to come to see
me before their draft notices ar

and son motored to Salem for the
weekend on a combined, business
and pleasure trip.
Mrs. Graham Ewans and sons,
Kenneth and James, drove to
Crater lake over the weekend.
Mrs. Clair Spray returned Wed
nesday from Columbus, 0., where
she attended a two-weeks conven
tion of the Ladies auxiliary to the
Brotherhood of Railroad Train
men. She made the trip by train.
Mr. and Mrs. William Ellis and
two children. Amy and Bill of
Washington, D. C, made a brief
i visit with the former's aunt, Mrs.
Charles Healey in Garden Valley.
Mr. Ellis is traveling for the gov
ernment and holds a position in
the general comptroller's office at
the nation's capital.
Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Tibbits
and children, Lena Mae and Dean,
were weekend visitors at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ab
bott of Roseburg. Maxine Abolt
accompanied the visitors to their

championship in an oratorical con
test. He acted in stage productions
of the University of Washington
players and later was director for
the Wilkes stock company. His
first radio program was produced
in Seattle and was so successful
he was invited to take it to San
Francisco.

WASHINGTON,- The state
department reported that Ameri
can Vice Consul Douglas S. Mac
kiran was killed by Tibetan bor
der guards while trying ;o escape
from communist -neid northwest
China across the Himalaya moun
tains.
The incident occurred last April
13 but announcement last week was
the first public word of it.
Mackieran and his camel cara
van apparently were mistaken for
bandits or Communist raiders. The
shooting was described as an ac
cident. Meanwhile the Tibetan govern
bent has expressed apologies.
The sketchy report received here
said two "natives" in the caravan
were killed and one was wounded
in the shooting. The only other
American in the group, Frank Bes-
sac, Lodi, Calif., escaped injury
and is now enroute to new Delhi.
