Mill Fights Plan For Sustained Timber Yield Unit
WASHINGTON, July 22
The complaint of a California lum
ber mill that it is about to be de
prived of government timber nec
essary to its operations came to
the attention of Congress Thurs
day. Chairman E n g 1 e (D-Calif) op
ened hearings by a house subcom
mittee on the proposed establish
ment by the Forest service of a j
sustained yield unit on the Fre-!
mont forest, in Oregon.
The timber is near mills at Lake
view and Paisley, Ore. The ivit
is intended to stabilize those com
munities and assure the mills a
permanent supply of timber.
The Willow ranch mill, about -20
miles south of Lakeview, six miles
outside the unit boundary and in
California, has complained it will
be deprived of the right to bid
government timber essential
to its operations.

OREGON STATE COLLEGE
Construction of Oregon State's y
clotron is progressing rapidly this
summer, although it will be sev
eral months or even a year before
it will be completed because of a
shortage of funds, according to Dr.
E. A. linker, head of the O. S. C.
physics department.
The large steel magnet and pole
aces, weigning approximately 50
tons, are in place. The cyclotron
itself is surrounded by a concrete
wall 30 inches thick to halt any
harmful rays. The wall is made of
17cx) pound concrete blocks given
to the college by the Consolidated
Builders of Portland
A 40 by 60 foot Butler-type build
ing will house the cyclotron, which
is located a short distance south
west of the new college coliseum.
Steel for the magnet was made
available to Oregon State college
without cost by the aiomic energy
commission after it had been dis
carded as worthless except for
magnet purposes. It originally had
been used for a n experimenlal
magnet at the University of Calif
ornia. Dr. R. R. Dempster and Dr. J.
J. Brady, nuclear physicists at O.
S. C, estimate total cost of the
Oregon State cyclotron will be less
than $50,000. only a fraction of the
marKet price of a similar mach
ine. When completed, the cyclotron
will be used for research and for
