Annual Grange Picnic
Slated At Umpqua Park
Melrose Grange members have
made plans to attend the annual
Grange picnic to be held Tues
day, August 1, at Umpqua park
at 7 p.m. Paul Krueger presided
in the absence of the master.
During the program hour songs
were presented by Ray Doerner, A.
Taylor, and Gtorge Showers. A con
tost on Oregon was enjoyed by Nel
lie Meyers, Vera Matthewman,
Ann Chitwood, Ray Doerner, Clar
son Chitwood and Carl Becker.
Mable Busenbark was appointed
sales slip chairman. Twenty-three
members attended. ,

Chelsea Browne, formerly of this
community, arrived last Satur
day to spend the week-end in the
Harry Winston home, where his
family had been visiting. On Tues
day Mr. and Mrs. Browne and two
children, Chelsea James and Cher
ry returned home to Portland.'
J. Kearby Masters, employed
with the Veterans administration
in Roseburg, is spending a two
weeks vacation at his ranch in
Winston.
Mrs. E. 0. Nickerson is confined
to her home with a "strep" throat
infection.
Last week-end Mrs. E. E. Post
was the guest of her daughter,
Miss Betty Jean, who is employed
at Horton, 40 miles west of Eugene,
for the summer. Miss Post ar
rived here Friday to visit her
parents and be here for her father's
birthday, July 21.
Mrs. Gunder Floy, who has been
receiving medical attention at
Mercy hospital in Roseburg, is
reported to be improved. She
expects to be released and allowed
to return home to Winston soon.
Miss Marlene Pruitt, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pruitt,
is attending the Camp Fire girls
summer camp at Tyee.
David Burks, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Burks, is reported to be
ill at his home on highway 42.

church of Winston enjoyed a pic
nic at Umpqua park. Chaperons
for the affair were Mrs. Dwight
Davidson and Mrs. May Belle Mac-
Donald.
Mrs. Jim Laurance, who recent
ly underwent surgery in a Eu'
gene hospital, is expected home
Saturday. During her absence the
i Laurance s son-in-law and daugh
ter, Mr. and Ms. Dick Reece, have
! moved into their home to serve as
caretakers.

home near Glide, where Jons will

War Boosts Dtmands

MUNCIE, Inc.-7P-The Korean
situation has brought an above nor
mal demand for canning jars,
Edmund F. Ball, president of the
Bail Brothers company, said.
Sales of canning supplies thus
far this month are far ahead of
sales in the same period of Jul ya
year ago, Ball said. He ad(id
present indications are that ahip
ments will increase. .
Ball said many women are can
ning to insure future food supplies
and to guard against rising food
costs.
Auto Union Striko Shuts
Kaiser-Frazer Plant
DETROIT, July 22 -The
Kaiser-Frazer automobile plant!
was closed Friday by a strike of
CIO United Auto Workers, in pro
test of the suspension of a union
shift chairman, Ralph Clark.
Kaiser-Frazer employs, 10,000.
Pickets, walking and in auto
mobiles, ringed the big plant at
Willow Run today. They refused
to permit anyone, including execu
tives, to enter.
Kaiser Frazer only Wednesday
called back 5,000 workers who had
been laid off because of a strike
in a Borg - Warner plant which
makes gears for Kaiser and Fraz
er automobiles. It had been oper
ating at only half of capacity for
two weeks.
Last Sight Of Relatives
Sought As Blindness Nears
LOS ANGELES, July 22
Doctors have informed Gordon Mc-Caw,-Henderson,
Nev., elementary
school principal, that he will be
blind in six months.
So today he is enroute to his
native Sydney, Australia, to see
relatives and friends for the first
time in 19 years. Accompanying
him is his wife, Elsie. McCaw's
eyesight has been failing rapidly.
