Giant Two-Stage
Rocket Fizzles At
Flying Attempt
By JAMES J. STREBIG
LONG RANGE PROVING
GROUND, COCOA. Kla., July 21
Experts have begun taking
a big V-2 rocket apart to find mi
why it failed to fly on its first
tr and to get it ready for a new
attempt next Monday.
The 23.000-Dound missile snnllei--
ed futilely before an audience of
less than 100 persons, watching
from a safe distance of 7.500 feet
on desolate I'oint Canaveral Wed
nesday, after nine hours of delay.
The V-2, one of a hundred cap
tured from (he Germans, was
scheduled to be fired like a bullet
on an angle designed for maxi
mum range.
On the nost of the V-2 was a
smaller rocket, known as WAC
corporal, which was to launch
itself in flight when the V-2 had
burned up its ten tons of fuel
This combination is known as a
two-stage or step rocket and is
one method of extending range.
"he WAC is too small for war pur
poses and is intended only for
experiments in the problems of
super speed, low level flight.
' Previous V-2 rocket firings in
this country have been straight
up for ultra-high' altitude studies.
Proving ground officials said they
could not guarantee a new attempt
Monday, but they would make
every effort to overhaul the 56
foot combined rocket and get it
ready by then. They immediately
postponed a second firing of a sim
ilar combination scheduled for
Wednesday.
The double rocket is an army
ordnance project known as bump
er and is a part of a broad pro
gram to develop guided missiis
as tactical weapons. Six previous
firines were made at White Sands,
N. M.
One of them set an altitude re
cord of 250 miles.
