Department Store Sales
Experience Heavy Boost
WASHINGTON, July 21 W
Department store sales soared last
week to 24 percent above a year
ago.
The rise, by far the biggest yet
for 3950, was noted in a federal
reserve report that followed by one
day President Trumans warning
to the American people against
panic buying and hoarding.
t was spread across the nation,
with sales showing gains ranging
from 12 percent in the Richmond
federal reserve district to 39 per
cent in the Dallas dis'rict.
Throughout the first half of this
year, 1950 sales by department
stores were lagging under the com
parable' period of 1949.
Concentration Camps
For Communists Urged
WASHINGTON. .Inly 21 -P i
Rep. Shafer (R-Mich) wants Am

hind a high fence in concentration
camps."
Shafer told the House that pend
ing legislation to require the regis

organizations is not enough.
"There is only one thing lo do
if we are to make it possible for
American boys to win on the bat
tlefields abroad," he said. "The
FBI knows who the Communists
are, who the Russian spies are.
The FBI knows the identity of
nearly all of the fellow travelers.
"They should be outlawed, ev
ery last one of them. We should
round them up; put them behind
a high fence in concentration
