The record lists 115 school bus
traffic mishaps, as compared with
239 the previous year. At the same
time, Newbry said the number of
buses in operation climbed to more
than I SO ai school districts
throughout the state expanded
transportation facilities to meet in
creasing enrollments.
Placed in effect last year were
laws requiring motorists to stop

An angry Austrian symphony con
ductor called off his American de
but Tuesday and flew back to Eur
ope after a brush with U.S. immi
gration authorities.
The conductor, 48-year-old Josef
Krips, had been invited to tha
United States to lead the Chicago
symphony in four summer con
certs this week. He is chief con
ductor of the Vienna state opera
and also leads the Vienna Phil
harmonic orchestra. ,
He and his wife arrived here by
air Monday and were immediately
detained by the immigration ser
vice for reasons that have not
been made public.
Immigration supervisor Edward
J. Shaughnessy said only that "cer
tain information" had been receiv
ed about Krips. and he would not
disclose its nature. He gave Krips
the choice of leaving voluntarily
or being deported, although he had
an American entry visa.
Krips said he had no idea what
the. objection to his visit plight
be.

He added that the only thing he
could recall that might have been
held against him was a trip to

TOURNAMENT PLANNED
The women golfers of the Rose
burg Country club have complet
ed plans for the Willamette Valley
Southern Oregon Women's Tour
nament, which will be held here
Tuesday, August 1. Mrs. E. A.
Pearson, tournament chairman, is
general chairman of the affair and
is assisted by Mrs. Ted Wirak,
Mrs. Roger Gee and Mrs. Roy
Sheppard, who are members of the
tournament committee. They are
also assisted by Mrs. L. E. Mc
Clintork and Mrs. James Hughes,
directors on the governing board
of the association. -
The Roseburg women golfers will
entertain visiting golfers from
Bend, Klamath Falls, Corvallis,
Eugene, Medford, Grants Pass and
Coos Bay.
Besides the Sweepstakes play,
the women will compete for the
Sterling Silver pitcher, which was
given by the W. V. S. 0. presi
dent, Mrs. David Evans. It was
won last year by Medford. The
team with the six lowest net scores
wins this trophy. Prizes for the
day's play will be awarded in the
dining room at four-thirty o'clock.
Mrs. Walter Brydges has charge
of pairings. Roseburg A and B
class players, who wish to enter
this tournament, should call Mrs.
Brydges, phone 1602-R1, by July
21. A nine hole tour"ament is
planned for players with handicaps
of 30 to 39 inclusive. . - .
Monday evening at six-thirly o'
clock, a "get-acquainted" dinner
is planned for the visiting golfers
at the clubhouse. Roseburg golf
ers are also invited. Reserva
