New Blood Test For Cancer
Detection In Humans Nearly
100 Pet. Accurate In Result

PARIS, tJPh- A new blood test has to far proved almost 100
percent accurate in detecting cancer in humans, three Swiss physicians
reported here.
They told the fifth International Cancer Research congress the lest
is based on a chemical that appears in the blood of persons with
cancer. The chemical breaks down a certain kind of sugar, pentose
augar. The test is made by adding blood serum from the person to a
solution of the sugar.
The method was described by
Dr. Georges Menkes, Dr. P
tchnick and Dr. S. Stecnmf, of
Geneva.
The test was tried, they said,
on 200 persons with various kinds
of cancer. It was 95 percent right.

124 pcrssons with diseases other
than cancer also showed negative
reactions to the test, the Swiss
expert said.

seems to be a constant and prob

Dr. Michael B. Shimkin of San
Francisco's national cancer insti
tute said the tubes can carry
large amounts of drugs to the site
or the cancer. Twice as m u c h

reached the same site, ne explain
ed. Drugs were given In this way to
SO patients, all dying of cancers,
in the past year. Dr. Shimkin
said. About half of them received
temporary help and a few obtain

time poison gases,
Easy On Patltnr
The tube method, Dr. Shimken
said, had proven safe and may
become increasingly useful. The
patient lies on a fluroscopic table
and doctors watch where the tube,
or catheter, is going. The patient
gets a local anesthetic at the point
of the tube's entry and doesn t
seem to mind the process, the doc
tor added.
Two other reports at the session
described the use of virus diseases

teria, the tiny viruses have to en
ter body cells to live and repro

Henry Best, convicted of treason
for broadcasting Nazi propaganda
during World War II, has been
granted a stay of sentence pend
ing an appeal to the U.S. supreme
court.
The stay was granted Best yes
terday by the U.S. court of ap
peals, which denied a similar ap
peal a few days ago.
Best was sentenced to life im
prisonment and fined $10,000 ir
June, 1048, after he was convict
ed by a federal court jury. He
has been held in jail without bail
down (he cancerous growth.

said such diseases had been given
to IB persons suffering from cancer
of the lymph glands or cancer of
the blood, leukemia. Some recover
ed temporarily, for a few weeks
or months, the doctors said.
Each virus administered was of
type that could be controlled or
cut off with such modern antibio
tics as aureomycin or Chloromy
cetin. Diseases used included a
virus disease of cats, a veneral
disease called lymphopathia ven
erum and Rocky mountain spotted
fover.
Dr. Alice E. Moore of the sloan
kettering insiitutute for cancer re
search, New York, told of using
another virus which causes Russian
encephalitis. This dangerous dis
ease, given to mice, destroyed some
kinds of cancer.

Tornadoes Deal
Damage In Ohio
UM4, 0., July 20 (JP Twin
tornado slashed through two west
ern Ohio communilies last night
ripping roofs off at least 30 homes,
damaging about 270 others, and
injuring 30 persons. '
No one was killed .and no ser
ious injuries were reported.
First reports indicated damage
in Lima where the high winds
cut an eight-block wide swath
would be at least $1,350,000. Dam
age to power company facilities
was expected to add another $500,
000 to the figure.
There was no immediate esti
mate of damage in the rural Van
Wert area. They struck that com
munity of 10,000, lifting the entire
Bethel M. E. church building into
the sky and ripping off roofs n
four barns. The church was demol
ished. A drive-in theater built only
two weeks ago on the outskirts of
Lima was leeled. The wind rip
ped the roof off the Lennox Fur
nace company's brick building and
shattered a wall.
At Beaver dam, eight miles
away, a barn collapsed, killing
four cows. Homer F. Weaver, 45,
who was milking the animals, was
buried under 22 tons of hay. He
was not injured.
LUBBOCK, Tex., Julv 20 -J.&
Lightning yesterday killed a child
as thunderstorms whipped across
the south plaines of West Texas
spawning one small tornado that
battered the tiny town of Ropes
ville. The tornado caused heavy prop
erty damage at Rnpesville, a
town of about 1,000 persons IS
miles southwest of Lubbock, but
there were no known injuries.
Rain estimated at four to eight
inches flooded the town. The rain
and hail caused much crop
damage.
