Fewer Roosters Needed In
Poultry breeders can make a sub
stantial saving in the cost of pro
ducing hatching eggs simply by
using fewer males in their breeding
flocks, according to results of an
O.S.C. agricultural experiment sta- i
tion study by Dr. J. E. Parker, !
poultry husbandman in charge, and I
Dr. P. E. Bernier, associate poultry I
husbandman.
Investigations with New Hamp
shires indicate that only six to
seven males are necessary per loi)
hens to maintain consistent high
fertility of eggs. Many poultrymen
have been using up to 10 or 12 ,
niosters per loo hens without in
creasing fertility. In at least one
instance Parker and Bernier ob-
tained relatively high fertility us-i
ing only one male per 100 hens.
By using fewer males, poultry-1
men cannot only reduce costs, but
also do a better job of selecting '
breeding males and increase the j
number of progeny sired by males '
of superior breeding lines. I

by force of arms, but we shall have failed of our real purpose unless
we also demonstrate to the under-privileged millions that our demo
cracy better meets their needs than does Communism,

Of course the western world on !
the whole recognizes the totalitar-
ian evils of Communism. We know
that it aims at fierce regiments-1
tion of the people.
However, the primitive masses
of Asia, who are treading the paths
their ancestors trod centuries ago,
don't know what the Red ism really
means. They only know what Bol
shevist agents tell them: that Com
munism is the savior of downtrod
den humanity, that it will take
lands from the rich and give to
th1! poor. That it will heap their
tables with plenty.
These specious promises afe fas
cinating to underprivileged folk.
I've spent a lot of time in the
Orient and can tell you from per
sonal observation that there are in
that part of the world untold mil
lions of peasants who never know
anvthing but hunger.
Naturally they think with their
bellies. And broadly speaking it is
on this basis that the ideological,
approach must be made to them.
They want to know what Demo
cracy will do to improve their
lowlyly lives.
China Furnishes Example
Let's take a specific example
China, which .currently is under
control of a Communist govern
ment, and previously was ruled
by Chiang Kai-shek's national re
gime. And here let it be pointed
out that regimentation doesn't
mean popular support. The fact
that the people formerly obeyed
the Nationalist government, and
now obey the Red Regime, doesn't
necessarily mean that they approve
of either.
As a matter of fact the ordinary
people never have participated in
their governments. Asia as a whole
is just starting out in political
education. The usual attitude is one
of sufferance. The rank and file
accept what fate hands them, but
their loyalty will go to the ide
logy which gives them the better
things of life.
