Get Attention Of
Oregon 4-H Clubs
A good many Oregon farm trac
tors are receiving more than the
customary attention this year.
Oregon's newest 4-H club proj
ect, tractor maintenance, has at
tracted more than 200 youngsters
who are enrolled in 25 clubs lo
cated in 18 counties, reports L. J.
Allen, state 4-H club leader. The
project, new this year in five
western states including Oregon, is
under the sponsorship of the Gen
eral Petroleum corporation of Los
Angeles,
Union county leads the state with
four clubs having a total . enroll
ment of 29 club members.
The protect includes tractor
maintenance rather than repair,
and has the intention of acquaint
ing 4-H club members with practic
es in maintaining and operating
tractors skillfully and safely. Be
fore the close of the club year this
fall, several counties plan contests
in maintenance and handling.
To the state's most outstanding
1950 tractor maintenance club
member, the General Petroleum
corporation will award an all-ex
pense trip Io 4-H club congress in
Chicago. Announcement or the
award will be made in October
when winners of all state contests
are named, Allen states.
On a county basis, tractor main
tenance project club members will
also be rated at the close of the
c lib vear. Those club members
rating in the blue or top group
will each receive a sterling sil
ver medal.
At 4-H Club congress in Chi
caeo. eight state tractor mainten
ance winners ' will receive college
scholarships valued at $300 each.
The project is nationwide.

Dr. Vera H. Brandon, professor of
child development at Oregon State
couege, win be recommended for
appointment as acting denn of
home economics at O.S.C. to the
slate board of higher education at
its July meeting, the executive of
fice has indicated.
Dr. Brandon has been in charge
of Ihe dean's office sinco July 1,
when Miss Ava B. Milam retired
after serving as head of the school
for 33 years and as a member of
the O.S.C. staff for 39 years. Dr.
Brandon will be in charge until a
uean is appointed on a. perma
nent basis.
The new acting dean has been
a member of the O.S.C. limne pen.
nomics staff since 1928, and for
three years was acting head of the
household administration depart
ment. She is widely known through
out the slate as chairman of the
governor s family life committee,
as slate chairman of child develop
ment and family relations of the
Oregon Home Economics associa
tion and in connection with other
statewide activities.
She received three' different B.S.
degrees and a master's degree
from O.S.C, and her Ph.u. wun a
major in parent education from
the University of Iowa. She Is a
member of numerous professional
organizations, She has three mar
ried daughters, all of whom are
home economics graduates from
O.S.C. Her husband, before his
death in 1927, was head of the
O.S.C. industrial arts department.
