Food Price Hikes
Affect Budget Of
Camp Fire Girls
Camp Fire council members at
meeting Monday at the chamber
of commerce office discussed con
cern over the rising price of food,
in relation to the Camp Tyee food
budget for the three-week sessions
which began Sunday.
Mrs. Jack Chapman, chairman
of the menu committee said the
committee is endeavoring to keep
the food budget within bounds. It
a suggested that groups of par
ents or friends may provide treats
for the campers as an aid to the
menu. Anyone wishing to do this
may contact Mrs. Chapman. 577-R,
or Mrs. Wm. Unrath, 1012-R and
the treats will be picked up. With
campers and counselors, the group
totals 70, accordig to Mrs. Chap
man.
Among items which will help the
food budget are fruits, oranges,
watermelon, fresh farm produce,
cold drinks, candy bars, jams or
jellies, chickens, turkeys, cakes or

Union Officials
On Non-Red Oath
WASHINGTON, July 12 -i&i
The U.S. court of appeals for the
district of Columbia ruled by 2-1
vote Monday that national offic
ers of the AFL and CIO need not
file non-Communist oaths before
AFL and CIO unions can take rase
before the National Labor Rela
tions board.
This decision was directly con
trary to a ruling Mr.v 5 by the
U. S. court of appeals at New
Orleans. The sup:-emi! court mav
eventually have to dwide which
o! the two courts is right. ,
Monday ruling came in a case
involving the west Texas Utilities
Company, Inc., Abilene Tex.,
which the Nl.RB had found mtiltv
of refusing to bargain with three
locals of the AFL Electrical Work
ers. The court upheld a board or
der which directed the company to
bargain.
At the tine the case originated.

The question for the appeals
court was whether the AFL nation
al officers came under the so-called
"non-Communist" section of the
Taft-Hartley labor law. That sec
tion prohibits a union from filing
chargea against an exployer until
in officers and the officers of "any
national or international labor or

The court majority made up
of Judges Henry W. Edgerlon and
David L. Bazelnn decided that
the AFL and CIO are more like
confederations, alliances, or trade
associations and that the provision
does not apply to their national of

sented. The facts and issues were es
sentially similar in the case the
New Orleans court decided in May.
The five-man NLRR has itself
taken the stand that AFL and CIO
national officers did not have to
file non-communist affidavits. It
differed with the Nl.RB general
counsel, Robert N. Denham, who
has independent powers under the
Taft-Hartley act. In 1947 Denham

Rev. Wesley Durland of Camaa
Valley had both feet crushed Tues
day morning when a logging truck,
owned by Alva Bartley, backed
over him.
Rev. Mr. Durland had been driv
ing the water wagon for the C. b
D. Logging company, James
Combs was bringing him from
work when they stopped to help
the trucker, who had lost load
of logs.
Rev. Mr. Durland was walking
away from the back of the truck
when it was put in reverse. Some
one saw it waa going to strike
Durland and called in time for
him to move enough to save his
life, but not in time for him to
clear his feet from the wheels.
James Combs rushed him to Mercy
hospital. He was taken Tuesday
evening to a Portland hospital for
surgery.
