Retail Prices Of
Bread, Meat Rise
In New York City
NEW YORK, July 12 I.T
Retail bread and meat prices went
up in New York this week.
Two firma hiked the price of a
loaf of bread a penny a loaf to
17 centa. Olher bakers were re
ported ready to do the same thing.
The Great Atlantic & Pacific
Tea co., announced increases in
the retail price of meat ranging
from one to four cents a pound
the new price of sirloin ateak,
for instance, is 97 cents a pound
Chuck steak will cost 6.1 cents
against the former price of 59 cents
a pound.
H. C. Bohack Co., and the Grand
Union co. both said they would
make similar changes in their price
list.
Spokesmen for the large chains
said heavy consumer demand for
meat continued despite recent in
creases. The bakery firms gave no ex
planation for the hike in bread
prices.
The agriculture department said
it Washington last Thursday thai,
considerably higher prices for beef
and pork are likely if the Korean
situation leads to stepped-up gov

for meat.
Meat prices have been inching
up in major cities. The rises have

Travelogue Film
Shown At Kiwanis
Roseburg Kiwanis club members
Tuesday noon were enjoying a trav.
elogue motion picture, featuring
scenic attractions of the United
States, when suddenly the film
stopped.
An investigation showed a fuse
had blown somewhere, but just
where could not be determined, and
the film could not continue. The
motion picture, in addition to be
ing a travelogue, contained a sto
ry of a young ex-GI flier, who was
touring the country by bus attempt
ing to locate a nurse who attended
him in the military hospital during
the war. The nurse was always in
the town just ahead.
The Kiwanians were left "up in
the air" as to whether the young
fellow ever found the girl. The film
was supplied by the Greyhound
Bus lines.
About 21 club members went to
Grants Pass Tuesday night to at
tend the Kiwanis club meeting in
that city. This is a part of the inter
club visitation program, aimed at
promoting closer relations.
The club at its meeting Tuesday
held a brief memorial for Dr. F.
W. Field, a former member, who
died in Portland Sunday.
Mrs. T. B. Virden, president of
the Business and Professional
Women's club, was present and
announced the forthcoming pro

Dwarfs," which her club is spon

Farm Safety Week
Dated In Oregon
SALEM, Givernor Douglas Mc
Kay, supporting the national pro
clamation of Farm Safety week for
July 23 to 29, has declared
the same period as Oregon Farm
Safety Week.
Governor McKay issued this
statement:
"Oregon famers and farm work
ers are being killed, maimed or
otherwise hurt at a rate alarm
ing to those who want this state
to progress safely toward new re
cords or agricultural and indus
trial production.
"May I emphasize that claims
filed with the Industrial Accident
commission for covered farm firms
or farmers for the calendar year
1949 ranked seventh in volume
among the 25 hazardous industrial
cateeories of Oregon.
"The theme of Oregon Farm
Safety week to learn and to
obey farm safety rules could
not be a better instructional guide
for farmers and farm workers to
follow during Orogon Farm Safety
week, nor for the year to come.
"Let us make Oregon a better
place to live and a safer place to
farm."

There it Was
Right in The Middle!
Easy Roberts mowed his lawn
early last Saturday. Then he sat
on the porrh, and watched Handy
Peterson ruttina; hit grass. ,
The Roberts' property and th
Peterson's border each other
with no hedge or fence between
them. So, when Easy notices Handy
had left about a four-foot atrip
unmowed along the boundary, he
walks over and asks why.
"That's your land," says Handy.
"Mint ends here. See, it lines up
with that oak tret across the'
road!" Easy didn't think so, so
they went up and down looking for
the surveyor's marker. Where did
they find it? Right in the middle
of their "no man's land 1 "
Well, they both grin and takt
turns finishing the Jab and then re
treat to Easy's for a friendly glass
of beer together. From whers 1 ait,
a little searching around for the

the whole thing doesn't seem as
