Broadcast Faking
Yank Prisoner Is
Sent From Korea
WASHINGTON VP The first
broadcast of a statement attribut
ed to an American war prisoner
of the North Korean Communists
was reported Tuesday by U. b.
government monitors.
The prisoner was identified in a
broadcast by the North Korean
Controlled Seoul radio as Capt
Ambrose H. Nugent of the 2nd
artillery battalion. 24th U.S. Army
division.
A voice identified by a Korean
announcer as that of Nugent read
a statement of nearly 1,000 words
in English on Sunday. This de
nounced V. S. intervention in the
Korean fiehtine as a "barbarous.
aggressive action" and urged Am-
leans to desert to ine commu
nists. The official monitor's report said
the voice "sounded like an Ameri
can or possibly a Russian or Kor
ean who had resided so long in the
U. S. as to have lost virtually all
trace of foreign accent."
"The message itself seems to
have been translated from Kor
ean," the report said. "The speak
er read it slowly, phrase by phrase,
in a tired, halting, toneless voice."
The Seoul radio said Nugent was
among 72 Americans taken as pri
soners fromthe 21st infantry regi
ment and 32nd field artillery of
the 24th division. They were said
to be held in the fifth prisoner of
war camp in North ICorea.

Business Guessing On Possible Food, Price Controls

sors are wondering what the gov
ernment may have in mind for
them in the way of price controls.
Price jumps in meat, wheat, cof
fee and sugar, if continued, might
lead to talk of reviving controls,
some concede. The Agriculture de
partment stresses that there are
ample grain crops in sight this
year for all needs. And large gov
ernment stocks, acquired to sup
port prices, are at. hand.
The White ttouse so far has con
tented itself with saying the Presi
dent will make up his mind about
both allocations and price controls
after he gels the mid-year report
from bis council of economic ad
visors. The over-due report is ex
pected in some quarters to plump
for "business as usual" unless
hoarding of key commodities
should develop.
Despite scarcities in some indus
trial materials, most business lead
ers agree the nation's economy
can take care of both civilian and
military needs, if people stay calm
and buy only at the normal rate.

against a strike, lt had been
granted on the grounds that they
