Gala Oregon Trail Pageant Scheduled
At Eugene During Last Of This Month

when Lane county presents i t s
seventh Oregon Trail Pageant, in
which a cast of thousands pays ;
tribute lo the pioneers who opened ,
the West. I
All roads will lead to Eugene
July 26 to 29 as the four perfor
mances of the giant production un
fold on a 500-foot stage at the
Lane county fairgrounds.

ation since early last lall. And
since last spring Lane County men
have been cultivating their beards,
always a prominent feature of the
show Lane County stages every
three years. Early in July the
women of the area started turn
ing out in pageant costume, war
ing clothes like those their grand
mothers wore.

This year it will cost Lane
county $60,000 to present the ne
ver-old story of the pioneers who
settled the area 100 years ago.
The pioneer story Is re-told in each
production but each Pageant i s
based on a different theme. This
year "Seasons on the Trail" will
set the tone of the production, de
picting a century of progress in
the development in the west.
A full calendar of "special
events" will keep visitors busy
when they are not attending the
main show. The identical produc
tion will be repeated four times,

holiday mood. The modern touch
will be provided by West Coast
Shows, whose giant carnival will
be in town through the week of
the big show.
Susannah VII To Rule
The Lane county girl who reigns
over the gala week will be known
as Queen Susannah VII, seventh
in a royal line that began with
"Susannah 1" at the first pageant
in 1926.
In 1926 there were "merely"
hundreds in the cast. It grew
steadily until it is now one of the
major civic celebrations in the
west, with a cast of thousands
taking part in this year's produc
tion. Again this year the main
show will be directed by Doris
Smith, widely known Portland dir
ector, who has directed every
pageant.
Team-drawn vehicles such a s
covered wagons and stage coaches
and mounted units will play a
prominent part in reconstructing
the path of the pioneers who came
west the hard way. .
Mail orders for tickets will be
filled in the order received with
reserved seats selling for $3.60 and
$2.40 each. General admission tic
kets at $1.20 will be sold at the
gate.
