(f A 26-year-old Redmond man
is sought today over southeastern
Oregon in connection with a shoot
ing and alleged kidnaping at Spra
gue River last night.
He is Cleo Parks, believed to
be armed with a 30-30 calibre rifle.
District Attorney D. E. Van Vac
tor said Parks Ust night went to
the ranch home of his ex-wife,
Mrs. Doris Williams, and demand
ed that she give him their 18-months-old
baby. The girl refus
ed and Parks left.
Twenty minutes later, the dis
trict attorney said,
ed but a ranch hand, Kay. Scott,
had come into the house and he
refused to allow Parks to come in.
Then, according to Van Vector's
reconstruction of events, Parks
broke the glass out of a kitchen
door and fired one shot into the
house. .
The slug struck Scott, tearing off
his right arm at the elbow and
passing through his chest.
When help from neighboring
ranches arrived Scott, still con
scious, said Parks chased Mrs.
Williams out of the house and into
the darkness after the shooting.
State police and sheriffs officers
searched the Indian reservation
area around Sprague river through
the night without locating either
Parks or the 20-year-old girl. Sher
iff Jack Franey said Parks pro
bably had a car and may have
driven back toward Lakeview and
Redmond, forcing the girl to ac
company him.
Scott, aged 25, is in a critical
condition at a hospital here.
