Answer to Previous Punlo LoGrand Denies Unfair Treatment Of Firemen Sot., June 24, 1950 Tht News-Review, Roteburg, Or. 11 Farm Machine MODEST MAIDENS tnf lit litiuiiil U.l hyaOSM LA GRANDE A charge that firemen here receive unfair treatment under the city manager form of government was denied by La Grande city commission Presi dent Francis Greulich. The charge was msde before the AFL state convention last week by S. D. Stevens, vice-president of the International Fire fighters' union. Greulich asserted that firemen's pay here compares favorably with other fire departments, and that the 72-cent hourly minimum wage is not bring violated in La Grande. That minimum wage, he said, doesn't go into effect until July 1 and after July 1 La Grande is go ing to pay the firemen more. Greulich called Stevens' criti cism a "political" one, and said it might herald an attack on the city manager system being con sidered in Portland. tern will cost around $37,590,000. Federal Competition Ends Career Of Bank ATLANTA, 111., June 23 -OP-The 62-yvar-old Peoples bank ' of Atlanta is going out of business of what its directors called "ex cessive taxes, government restric tion and government competition." The decision of the directors was announced yesterday by circuit Judge Frank S. Bevan, who also is president of the bank. He said the bank has only a "hatful" of farm mortgage loans because of com petition by various government lending agencies. But he added that the bank is in a "healthy condition" and that its assets are "highly liquid." Atlanta, a community of 1,300 in central Illinois, also is served by the Atlanta National bank. The March statement of the bank showed its assets and resources totaled $1,636,646. .'
