COULEE DAM, Wash. I.P)
Grand Coulee dam, the world's
largest power producer, forms 'he
iop step of a giant stairway of
water planned to quench the Pa.
cific Northwest's thirst for elec
tricity. Endowed with only minor depos
its of coal and oil, the northwest
has something better the Co
lumbia river. Together with ts
tributaries, this river contains
about one-third of the potential
water power of the United States
Grand Coulee dam is second
only to the great wall of China
as man's biggest piece of mas
onry. Construction on it began in 1934
to provide future power and irri
galion water, and to give jobs to
men made idle by the drpesssion.
By the end of next year, its

project win start lowing to more
than one million acres of land in
the "Big Bend" area of Central
Washington.
Coulee dam intersects the Co
lumbia at the northern edge of an
area known as the Grand Coulee
Here, water pouring from a big
ice cap thousands of years back,
gouged ut a tremendous river
basin through many layers of
black lava rock.
When the glacier receded, it left
this yawning valley 27 miles long
and from one to five miles wide
Perpendicular cliffs a thousand
feet high are the sides.
The dam itself stands 370 feet
above the water level of the river.
That's as high as the Canadian
boundary, 1M miles away will per
mit. Lake Roosevelt formed by the
dam ends at the border.
In winter months, the entire flow
of the Columbia is diverted through
generators in two powerhouses at
the base of the dam. in the spring
and summer when the river crests
with water from ice fields in moun
tains to the east and north, the
dam becomes a scenic delight.
Surnlus watpr ra
face of it makes a waterfall Twice
as high and half as wide as the
famed Niagara. i
Despite rigid securitv measures
necessary to protect this "achil
le's heel" of the northwest, visitors
are welcomed every day of the
year but Christmas and New
Year's day.
Electricity from Coulee dam
courses over high tension wires
into five stales: Washington, Ore
gon, Idaho. Montana and Utah It
is the master plant of the north
west power pool, a power-sharing
arrangement which permits power
systems of the five states to bor
row and loan power as the need
arises.
About 50 miles down stream from
Coulee dam, construction of Chief
Joseph dam, which will have the
second largest power plant on the
river, already has started. It's cap
acity will be slightly less than
half that of Grand Coulee.
Construction also has started on
the third largest, Mc,Naiy dam.
and Bonneville dam, at the bottom
of the "water stairway." has been
a major northwest power producer
for many years. The only privately-owned
plant in the stairway is
Rock Island dam, built bv the
Puget Sound Power and Light
compnay.
Six other dams proposed by the
army engineers will make almost
full use of the 1646 foot fall of the
Columbia between its entrance to
the United States and its exit to
the Pacific ocean.

West Germany's Key Roads,
Bridges Being Mined To Stall
Any Possible Russian Attack
FRANKFURT, Germany (,P The western allies are reported
mining key roads and bridges throughout west Germany and other
parts of Europe to Mall any possible Soviety attack.
These preparations came to light
when a German mat nine uuh-
lished pictures of a winding high
way around famed Lorelei moun
tain on the Rhine river in the
French tone. The pictures showed
a row of holes being drilled in
the road and then covered with
concrete caps. Explosive charges
dropped into the holes would tum
ble the highway into the Rhine at
one of its narrowest points.
American headquarters declined
to comment. But a French source
in the Kobleni area said:
"It is not only on this route on
which such measures are taken
and not only the French who are
making such preparations. It is the
allied high command which order
ed this."
Plans have been in the books
for more than a year for allied
occupation forces in westers Ger
many to fight a delaying action, if
trouble comes.
The plans call for evacuation of
civilians as rapidly as possible.
Emergency signals have been giv
en all dependents of U.S. army
and air force officials to be pre
pared to pull out if and when an
alarm is flashed.
Indications are that th western
defense chiei's have drawn un a
master plan for similar defense
preparations in other European
countries.
The pictures touched off a furor
in the Russian-controlled east Ger
man press.
The Communist newspapers did
not mention any oossibiiitv of
Russian attack, but declared the
planned destructions were "part of
an American aggressor's plan
xt marcn against ine soviet union."
One newspaper said the Ameri
cana are preparing te follow Hit
ler s scorched earth policy.
The Red press also claimed the

performance.
Protects
Tydol's oxidation inhibitor
protects against bearing cor
rosion. Tydol's Dynamic Flaw
feature gives instant lubrica
