Columbia River Diversion
Idea 'Mostly Just Talk'
SEATTLE UP) k member
of President Truman's water re
sources policy commission says
channeling Columbia river waters
more then 1,000 miles to America's
water-starved areas is a "highly
dramatic idea, but mostly just
talk'
Dr. Roland R. Renne, president
of Montana State college, added
that Columbia river water gives
less promise of solving Califor
nia's water shortage than the wa
ters of the Pacific ocean.
The educator held out little hope
of using ocoan water soon, but re
gards it as a more practical long
range aim than divergence of Co
lumbia river streams. He said:
"The influential people of Cali
fornia don't think the Columbia
i river idea is feasible. They be-
licve they can find closer and
j more reasonable sources of supply."
