Snead. Hogan
Are Favorites
In U.S. Tourney
By WILL GR1MSLEV
ARDMORE, Pa., June 8 (JPi
Sam Snead's putter, Ben Hogan's
legs and the weather were the
chief topics of conversation as 165
of golfdom's very select teed on
today in the 50th national open
championship.
The first of 55 threesomes set
out over Merion's 6.694 well
trapped, weed-fringed yards at 7
a.m.
Dick Mayer, young blond-haired
professional of old Greenwhich,
Conn., was the first man off, ac
companied by Loddie Kempa of
Kansas City, the lone left hander,
and Clarence Ehresman of Chel
tenham, Pa.
Contenders will be swinging un
til almost dark in the opening round
of this rugged 72-hole test that has
broken the hearts of champions.
The tournament winds up wilh a
double-barreled 36 holes Saturday
The weather rated top billing
along with Snead and Hogan, who
have been established solid favor
ites. Two days of near-90 tempera
tures have left the broad, undu
lating greens hard as concrete and
slick as glass. Each carpet was
packed by a 300-pound roller last
nignt to make sure they d be ligiu
ning fast.
Unless there is some relief by
showers, most of the pros agreed,
four rounds of 71, one over par,
will be sufficient to take the
prize. The weather forecast was
increasing cloudiness today wilh
scattered showers tomorrow after
noon. Merion, where a 14-year old lad
named Bobby Jones began his big
time tournament career in 1916
and where he ended it in 1930
with the sport's only "grand
slam," has been turned into a
monstrous bogie-man for this part
icular tee party.
Five hundred tons of fresh, white
sand was trucked in and dumped in
to the course's 120 yawning traps.
One trap is so big golfers have
dubbed it "Merion Beach" and a
"No sun bathing allowed."

The National Collegiate Athletic

colleges on the carpet for "sanity

This was disclosed yesterday fol

NCAA enforcement committee
headed by Clarence P. Houston of
Tufts college.
"We uncovered evidence that six
schools are giving aid to athletes
in excess of that allowed by the
code," Houston said. He declined
to name the schools, but said any
punishment the council might de

be withheld until next winter.

Redding Browns
Defeat Medford
(By Th. Associated Press)
The Redding Browns gained half
game in their battle to hang to
the top rung of the Far West base
ball league last night.
The Browns defeated Medford's
Rogues, 7 to 5, with the aid of
a 5-run inning featured by a ho
mer by Bob Thompson, two singles,
a double a walk and an error.
Second place Klamath Falls,
rained out at Eugene, dropped two
full games back of the leaders.
The slugging Pittsburgh Dia
monds moved up into third place
ahead of Medford by virtue of a
wild and woolly 19-11 victory over
the Willows Cards.
Three homers, two by Lou Cook
and one by Bill Hurst, accounted
for six of the Diamonds' runs, but
wildness of the pitchers featured
the game as the card hurlcrs gave
up 10 bases on balls and diamond
hurlcrs permitted 13.
The hustling Reno Silver Sox de
feated the Marysville Peaches 16
to 12 in another marathon. The
victory was the 12th in their last
14 starts for the Silver Sox and
boosted them
to the top of the
second division over Marysville.
