TACOMA. June 7 LP) Wey
erhaeuser Timber company indi
cated today it saw no hope of a
settlement of an international
Wood-workers of America (CIO)
strike against seven of its branches
in Oregon and Washington.
"There appears to be no basis
for a prompt settlement . . . des
pite the fact the company has made
two substantial offers. ... It also
appears, in view of the union's
rigid opposition to both of these
proposals, that no basis exists at
this time for a meeting in the near
future," the company said.
The statement, contained in a
letter addressed to all striking
members of the IWA, pointed out
that the company had originally
offered a pension plan, health and
welfare benefits and three paid
holidays. The second offer was for
a 10!4-cent-per-hour wage increase.
The union has continued its de
mands for a union shop 7V4-cent
health and welfare program and
three paid holidays.
"The company is unchanged int
its belief that the union's health
and welfare program is neither
legal nor practicial, and that a
union shop is not in the best inter
est of the employes or the com
pany," the Weyerhaeuser state
ment explained.
As estimated 9,000 men have
neen jobless since the IWA struck
May 15.

championed the argument that "no
government local, state or fed
eral should do for free people
what free people can do for them
selves." It pledged support to the so-called
balanced plan for legislative reap
portionment favored revision of
state government for efficiency
and economy and continuation of
the veterans' loan program by the
state.
Chairman Sigfrid Vnander listed
