Mrs. William Allen
Dies After Illness
Mrs. William (Mona) Allen, 75,
well-known resident of Roseburg
and Brockway, died at a local hos
pital Monday following a short ill
ness. She was born in Shasta county,
California, Jan. 7, 1875, and came
with her parents to Douglas county
in 1880. She was married here in
1892 to James Henry Porter, de
ceased, and later moved to Cali
fornia. She returned to Oregon to
make her home at Portland for
several years before returning to
Douglas county in 1912. She was
married to William M. Allen in
1918 at Portland. Mrs. Allen was
a communicant of the Episcopal
I church and a member of the wom
!n's Auxiliary of Railway Conduc

which is in charge of funeral ar
rangements until 10 a.m. Thurs
day morning.

In a case similar to that of
"arry Bridges, west coast long
shore leader, Carles was convicted
by a federal court jury of having
lied in his petition for naturaliza
tion. Pridges was similarly con
victed in San Francisco and sen
tenced to five years imprisonment.
Judge Fee revoked Carles citizen
ship and sentenced him to 15
months in prison.

rene said Carles likely would be
deported to his native Greece at
the expiration of his sentence.

Carles, 54, a restaurant chef, said
he had never been arrested. Im
migration agents testified he had
been arrested in San Francisco
on grand larceny and state prohibi
tion law violation charges and in
Seattle had been sentenced to
prison for forgery.

Hamilton told the court he was un
able, to find specific authority in
naturalization laws Jor revocation
of citizenship because of perjury
in the application. Judge Fee said,
however, that power was held by
the court.
Hamilton said that both Bridges
and Carles were indicted under the
same statute. As a rule, he said,
citizenship revocation is based on
a special proceeding rather than as
part of a criminal charge.
Carles came to the United States
in 1912 and was naturalized in 1946.
Hartland, New Brunswick, has a
covered bridge 1,282 feet long.
