Awards Received
By 4-H Members
Last Saturday was a big day for
alt 4-H club members in the cen
tral Douglas county area. This
marked the spring achievement
exihibit in which the 4-H members'
work was exhibited to the public
after being judged by Mrs. May
Matthews and Mrs. Corinne Mc
Taggart. The Danish system of
judging was used, in which each
exhibit was given a blue, red or
white award. Lou Gabel, of the
U. S. forest service, judged th
forestry projects.
During the day's program a
style review was conducted by
Mrs. Matthews, in which each girl
modeled the dress she bad made
herself The dresses were judged
for workmanship but no placing
was made on modeling. Instead,
each contestant is invited to take
part in the county style review
contest this fall during the county
fair, at which time premiums will
be given.

local employment office.
Defined as "reviewing potential
qualifications of an applicant , who
has not made a satisfactory voca
tional choice," employment coun
seling usually involves the readjust
ment of workers to the immediate
job outlook. "Immediate" refers
to both time and location.
After recognition of the need for
assistance and guidance in a new
vocational plan, three main steps
are followed by the Roseburg local
office:
(1) Survey of the applicant's
training, abilities and work-history
in discovering possible pew occupa
tional directions.
(2) Outlining of a new plan for
training or vocational development
that will result in effective place
ment in appropriate employment.
(3) Check-up on new work to
determine suitability of job and
adjustment of worker to new occu
pation and working conditions.
Trained employment counselors
in local offices are familiar with
the variety of vocational training
available in most Oregon commu
nities. As most of these occupa
tional adjustments are made at a
fairly early age, youth programs
are specially important.
Accurate knowledge of" the com
munity's economy also is neces
sary. Are the main work opportuni
ties in agriculture, lumber or food
processing? Are they seasonal or
year-round in nature? What chance
for advancement? Answers to these
and thousands of other pertinent
questions may be found at your
nearest employment offices.
