Actress Shelley Winters Claims
She's Not Temperamental At All

Winters, answering reports that
she is temperamental, declares
that her press agents have been
working overUme.
The blonde bombshell's latest en
counter in print was when she
reportedly stalked off the set of
"Frenchie" after a dispute with
director Louis King.
"Let's put it this way," she said.
"The publicity department tried
to figure out how they could get
the picture on the front page. So
they took a little incident ana blew

The "incident" concerned her
desire to be photographed on the
"Good" side of her fsce. 'The
fiicture Is in color and I want to
00k my best," she declared. "So
we had an argument. I was only
absent from the set a half-hour."
Director King confirmed her re
port, saying the whole thing was
a "tempest in a teapot."
"The business was played up
for more than it was worth," he
remarked. "Somebody has told
her that one side of her face is
better than the other, which is a
lot of foolishness. She looks good
on either side. I told her I couldn't
direct a picture if I had to work
under restrictions like that.
"After lunch we resumed shoot
ing and we photographed her on
both sides She has done some of
her best scenes in the picture
since then. This sort of trouble
happens on any picture."
When I saw Shelley in the studio
commissary I asked her point
blank: "Are you tempermental?"
"No, I'm not tempermental!"
she replied. Then for a gag, she
repeated the statement loud
enough for the whole- room to
hear. Uninhibited is the word for

Many reports have hit the press
in recent months concerning Shel
ley's alleged temper. One night
think that where there's smoke
there might be some fire. But
she claimed the stories have been
blown up by over-tealous press
agents.
Emergency Atom Control

PORTLAND ? A 12-member
team of scientists and physicians
has been equipped by the Atomic
Energy commission for emergen
cy action in this area. It would go
to work in event cf atomic war
fare or accidental release of ra
dioactive matter.
The team is the second to be
activated in the Northwest. The
other is at Seattle. A third is plan
ned for Pullman. There are 18
teams in the nation.

here. Thsee are reserves. He ex
plained the members would use
the equipment to monitor or de
tectradioactivity. The team would

Dr. Arthur F. Scott, Reed col-
lege chemist, is head of the local
unu. seven memDers are from
Reed college and five are of the
University of Oregon medical
school faculty.
