Warns Of Trend
To 'Socialism'
Dave. Hoover, Dradwood, Lane
county, candidate for the U. S.
Senator nomination of the Repub
lican ticket, made his initial ap
pearance in Roseburg Monday,
night speakinir before a moderate
siied crowd in the circuit court
room.
"We must Rive free enterprise an
opportunity to flourish without be
ing hampered by thousands of rules
and restrictions imposed by a mis
guided socialistic government,"
Hoover declared.
He scorned the tremendous gov
ernment spending, and upheld
America as a land of "opportu
nity." "Our government has completely
lost sight of this fundamental truth,
that the government should not
attempt to do for the people what
the people can do for themselves.
My friends, do not be fooled. We
are being led down a one-way
rond to socialism."
Hoover took issue with the re
cord of Sen. Wayne Morse, incum
bent, claiming "the junior sena
tor does cast his vote along de
finite lines. He is invariably
found in the camp with the social
welfare advocates, the union labor
bosses."
The issue Is not, he claims
"Dave Hoover versus Wayne
Morse it is liberty versus soc
ialism. We will not have liberty
long if the government taxes us
into bankruptcy, and we are sure
to have socialism if the burden
gets so great that the govern
ment takes over and dispossesses
private enterprises, as Senator
Morse recommended in the recent
coal strike."
Hoover praised the work of Rose
burg's two contributions to Con
gress Sen Guy Cordon and Con
gressman Harris Ellsworth.
Fire Deals $500,000
Damage To Tokyo Resort

damaged 8 buildings in the busi
ness district and left 400 persons
homeless last night at Atami, hot
Springs resort 65 miles southwest
of Tokyo. Damage was estimated
at about $500,000. Several V. S
Army rest hotels are operated
there but all are some distance
from the burned area.

team. Bob and Dianna, hid their

smiles today as they were told it
would be several days before spare
parts could be flown here for the
needed repairs on their twin-engine
Mosquito, the Huntress II.
They were well over half their
journey 11,838 miles when
they were forced to turn back to
Calcutta's air field yesterday
morning. And they were right on
the schedule they had set for top
ping (Mom's 1947 speed record of
73 hours.

'Ready To Go'
Mobilization
Plan Needed
NEWPORT, R. I., April 5.-I-PV-Bernard
Barurh called Saturday
for a "ready to go" mobilization
plan to place the nation on an all
out war footing the instant another
war is declared.
The noted financier said the
"time gap" needed to convert pro
duction from peace to war consti
tues the "gravest source of peril"
to the United States.
Speaking before staff members 1
and students of the Naval War col- i
lege. Baruch said: 1
"We can be sure that the Soviet i
leaders have not forgotten that it
took us nearly two and a half ,
years to convert our gigantic pro
ductive energies lrom peace to
war" in the last conflict.
"This time gap in our mobiliza
tion." he said, "is our gravest
source of peril. It is the weak
ness around which any enemy must
base its war plans."
The former presidential adviser
said U.S. possession ot the atomic
bomb has not "solely" prevented
"overt Soviet aggression . , . these
past years "
He said that "no nation in the
world will attack a mobilized
America."
"The only strategy any enemy
can have is to attempt to over
whelm us during that 'Too little,
too late' period while our military
power is still 'on order' ".

end for Oregon high school sen
iors. The three-day event will be
held on the campus April 14-16.
A Friday night vodvil show, stu
dent planned and presented, will
open Duck Preview April 14. An annually-staged
event for the benefit
of the World Student Service Fund,
the vodvil has been planned this
year to present the best in campus
entertainment to the high school
guests.
Saturday's events will open with
the assembly at 10 o'clock, followed
by a tour of the new Erb Memorial
Student Union.
Luncheon at noon will be a spe
cial affair sponsored by the Asso
ciated Students of the University of
Oregon. In the afternoon a baseball
game and a water carnival will be
on the agenda. Dinner at all living
organizations will honor the guens.
A choice of events is planned for
Saturday evening. Visitors may see
the all-important production of
"Martha," or attend a special
ASUO dance.
Special services will be held Sun
day at 11 o'clock in all churchea in
Eugene. The final formal event of
the weekend will he exchange din
ners at 1 p. m. These will enable
high school visitora to meet with
students in living organizations
other than the ones in which they
are housed.
Invitations were mailed this
week to students in all high schools
of the state.

Accuses East Germans
BERLIN. April 3 UP) The
noted Mozart girls' choir of Dres
den accused east German author
ities Tuesday of kidnapping their
director' wife and claimed some
one tried to poison their secretary.
The 21 girls, ranging In age
from 17 to 30, have fled from
Soviet-occupied Dresden to West
Berlin. They said they hoped
American authorities would pro
vide them a permanent haven in
west Germany.

Jobless Funds
Paid In March
Cut 25 Percent
SALEM. April 5 (.P) Ore
gon's unemployment dropped so
much during March that jobless
benefits decreased 24 S percent
from the record monthly total es
tablished in February.
Payments to the jobless in
March totaled S3.677.021, the unem
ployment compensation commis
sion said. The total was 11.7 per
cent less than in March, 1949
Last months payments brought
the 1950 total of $12,844,293, a new
quarterly high mark.
The number of persons claiming
benefits dropped from 65,731 in
early February to 32.357 last week.
The unemployment reserve
fund, out of which benefits are
paid, dropped to $71,370,000 last
week. That is the lowest since
early In 1947, and is slightly less
than when the war ended in Aug
ust, 1945. This past winter, the
size of the fund was reduced by
$10,000,000.
