complete counts, they show the ex
tent to which our great out-of-doors
is enjoyed.

the U. S. Forest service reports

of winter sports areas slumped 25
percent during 1949. This was
(Caused by the severe winter and
1 difficult traveling conditions.

persons averaged one-half day in
(popular forms of recreational use
tin the national forests. The 1949
estimate of camping shows an in
I crease of 26 percent over the previ
ous year. Winter sports, the next
'most popular recreational activity,
attracted over 400 000 visitors. Re
sort guests numbered 248.0U0, sum
i mer homes 68,000 and organisation
I camps 37.000. of the remainder,
T million persons averaged one
fourth dav in passing through the
forests on sight-seeing and business
trips.

"As a result the export trade for
lumber and flour has already been
liquidated with thousands of work
men being thrown out of employ
ment and ullimately some of the.se
industries will collapse if this pro
gram is continued," Angell said.
"The administration has authority
under existing laws to protect these
American producers but refuses to
do so."
