LANDSCAPING IS TOPIC AT HOMI EXTENSION UNIT MEETING AT RIVERSDALI The Riverdle Home Exteosion unit met Feb. 22 at the home of Mrs. Joe Guthrie in Garden Valley. Mrs. Corinne McTaggart spoko on "Landscaping Home Grounds". Plans were made to have an other meeting to teach the making of lampshades with Mrs. Emmett Walters and Mrs. Sig Madson lead ers. Mrs. A. J. Standley was unan imously elected to represent the unit as "delegate to Denmark". Members present: Mrs. Clair Spray, Mrs. Carl Schmidt, Mrs. Joe Guthrie. Mrs. Fred Parrott, Mrs. O. T. Michael, Mrs. Emmeit Walters, Mrs. Hugh Ritchie, Mrs. U.F. McLaughlin, Mrs. W. D. Hess, and Mrs. Don Guiley. Plans were msde for a plant and shrub sale at the next meet ing March 22. Corinne McTaggart will be the leader and topic will be "Family Busines and the Law". CANVONVILLE METHODIST GUILD WORKS ON OUILT The Methodist guild met Wed nesday evening with Mrs. Gordon Clark and Mrs. June Mclntyre at Canyonville. The group spent the evening working on a quilt which they plan to sell, the proceeds to go into the nursery fund for the new addition on the church. The guild members plan to start a Bible study in the near future. Guests attending were Mrs Erm al Briggs, Mrs. Day and Catherine Police. Members were Mrs. H. E. Taylor, Mrs. Waldon Thompson, Mrs. James Hays, Mrs. Mclntyre and Mrs. Clark. Refreshments were served by the hostesses. The next meeting will be March U at the home of Mrs. LeRoy Morris. Thurs., Mar. 9, 1 950 1 OjJTTjt DOUGLAS CLUE HEARS AT BESS CLOUGH RESIDENCE "History of Gardiner and ScotU burg" was the subject chosen by Mrs. Guy McGee for Oregon his tory at recent meeting of the South Douglas Study club beld at the home of Miss Bess Clough nesr Canyonville. The history covered a period from 1852 to 1950 and waa centered around the Hinsdale and Jewitt families, who were founders of the first banks at Coos Bay and Gardiner, and the. first telephone company. They are also noted for having established the mill and lumber Industry in the lower Umpqua region. Mrs. McGee was the daughter of the late Frank Sagaberd of Gardi ner. He worked for the navigation company which the Hinsdale fami ly operated. Many Koseburg read ers will remember how they made vacation trips to South Beach, to Scottsburg by train and stage, and then by boarding the boat "Eva" to the popular beach. Mr. Sagaberd navigated that boat. Current events were given by Mrs. Cecil Connor. Her subjects in cluded weather, lookouts, relationa with Bulgaria, changea in postage rates, the coal strike and the Mardi Gras. Mrs. Wade Worthington gave an interesting account of her trip to New York City and Washington D.C., with highlights related along the way. The humorous subject waa given by Mrs. Albert Brown. Mrs. How. srd Haymea waa program chairman. Refreshments carried out the Washington a birthday motif and were served by Mrs. Worthington and Mrs. William Brown. Guests who attended were Mra. The de votional were led by Mrs. Belle Clark taken from the 100 Psalm. She also read an interesting chap ter entitled "Fletcherne Life", tak en from the book by Emmett Fox.
