Wood burn edged Stayton, 30 to 26, by coming from behind. Favored Central Catholic of Port land, Gresham and Estacada rolled up first round wins in district 13 contests. Park Rose drew a bye in the single elimination card and meets Central Catholic tonight. Gresham goes against Estacada. The Catholic Rams dumped Sandy, I SI to Mi Gresham toppled Con I cordis, academy, 41 to 34, and Es tacada defeated Columbia Prep, peruana, 5 to 41. At McMinnville, the 8-A double elimination play opened with Bay ton edging Willamina. 43 to 41, and Salem academy overcoming Inde pendence, 34 to 31. Newberg, the favorite, play's Sheridan and Mc Minnville meets Dallas tonight. West Linn bowled over Canby, 33 to 30, in the opener of district 12-A singlt elimination play. The winner meets Molalla Friday night when Oregon City and Milwaukie are paired in the other semi-final. The title will be determined Mon day night. Stream Improvement Men Have Busy Spring Ahead PORTLAND, March 2. (.) The State game commission's stream improvement crews have a busy spring ahead. The commission plans to re construct Sandy river dam. clear more log jams from coastal streams, and do extensive screen ing work in Douglas county. Screens, built by the commission in its central point shop, will be placed on streams to keep game fish from entering irrigation chan nels. The Sandy river dam, built in 1932 to keep the channel open fr smelt runs, will be repaired. It is settling in the center, threatning to block, the lower channel with silt. March 2 -PI The State Game commission is counting eastern Oregon elk herds by air plane for the first time. . Fifty eight flying hours will be de' Oted to surveying the elk herds, which have been difficult to ob serve from the ground. Game . agents are conducting aerial surveys of Antelope, too, with all of Deschutes, Crook, Klam ath, Harney, Lake, and Malheur counties to be covered. Planes spot the antelope- at a 500-foot altitude, then descend to 150 to 300 feet to count the number of bucks, does, and young in the herd. The counts of game animals are used in deciding hunting limits. Exercise Hour Friday The YMCA women's exercise program will be held in the Benson school gymnasium from 7:30 to 9:30 Friday night, announced Mrs. Ruth Laws, Y program director. Ga., March 1UP) One after another of ten men on trial for plotting the lashing of aeven Negroes at Hooker, Ga., is pleading that red-caped and hooded Ku Klux Klansmen alone are to blame for the savage deeds. Three of the defendants in U.S. District court have gone so far as to assert in their testimony that instead of conniving with the Klan, they themselves were victims of its coercion and arrogance. One was Dade county Sheriff John W. Lynch who testified that a masked man rammed what "felt like a gun" in hia back and forced him to turn over two of the Negroes to robed lash-wielders. Deputy Sheriff John Bleckley, also a defendant, followed his su perior to the stand and gave simi lar testimony. Keener testified he did so, how ever, only because a Klansmaa reached under hia robe as if be were going to draw a gun.
