14 The News-Revlew, Roteburg, OreWed., Mor. 1, 1950 180 Cub Scouts Attend Annual Dinner, Ritual A record attendance of 180 cub acouta and parent were preaent at the annual blue and gold dinner held in the dining room of the First Chriatian church, Friday eve ning. I he opening flag ceremony waa conducted by two of the cubs David Phillips and Karl Thiele. The invocation waa given by Hie Klein fcldt, assistant pastor of the First Christian church. A Dotluck supper waa served on tables decorated in the traditional blue and gold colore of the cub acouta. The meeting waa conducted by Cub Master Dor. Reed who in troduced Scout Executive Roy Barnhart. Barnhart gave an inter esting talk on the scouting pro gram for the coming year. Cub master Reed presented corsagea to deii mothers, Mrs. Charles Vasey, Mrs. Emmett Gibbons, Mrs. Mamie Greisel, Mra. Forrester, Mra. Rob ert Phillips, Mrs. Don Reed and Mra. Everett Wimer. Charles Va acy, Rupert Coffman, Everett Wim er, committeemen for the past year were introduced. Committeemen for the coming year are Charlea Vaacy, Everett Wimer, Charlea Neal and Jams Robertson. Assistant Cub Master, Charles Vasey, then presented the follow ing awards: Bobby Conoso, wolf badge and gold arrow; David Carter, wolf badge; Jimmy Carter, woif badge; Kent Wishart, wolf badge and serv ice star; Karl Thiele, bear badge and service star: David Phillips, wolf badge; Jimmie Robertson, wolf badge and gold arrow; Leon Lark, wolf badge; Dennis Ellison, gold arrow; John Burkhart, denner stripe; Barney Wimer, lion badge; Dean Lounabury, beer badge, gold and silver arrow, asst. denner stripe; Car! Jay Hague of Canby was visiting with relativea and old frienda in this community this week. Hague is a brother-in-law of J. B. Rader. Mr. and Mrs. J. Ross Hutchinson spent Tuesday in Roseburg and were guests at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Villa La Raut, that night. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hancock who have orly recently returned from a winter vacation in New Mexico and Texas were visiting friends and relatives in the Elkton area last week. Mr. and Mra. Hancock make their home at Salem. Mr. and Mra Charlea Henderer, Mr. and Mra. Wade Henderer, New ton Henderer and Shorty Duff went to Corvallia Friday where they at tended the Oregon Oregon State basketball game. Misa Evelyn Hudson and grad uate assistant Beverly Benet drove to Ashland on businesa Saturday. Mrs. Edith Gatea waa a recent visitor at the hospital in Salem where her daughter. Norma Thotv as, is receiving medical treatment. We are very glad to report that Mrs, Gates found Norma much bet ter and satisfactorily responding to treatment. On the aick list but reported Im proving are Mra. Lawerence Smith and Mra. Wilbur Garrison. Arnold Cheever is also "under the weather." They argued that it was unfair for the government to collect the same amount in taxes on a pack of theiF cigarets that it doea on a pack of higher-priced cigarets made by the big-name companies. Spokesmen for tobacco-growing North Carolina farmers quickly fil ed a protest.
