Sutherlin Church
Cornerstone Rites
Set By Lutherans
Cornerstone laying services are
oeuig planned lor Sunday alter
noon, March 5. by St. John's Lu
theran church. Services are sched
uled for 3 p.m. Sunday on the
cnurcn a new property on aixth ave
nue, and Kruse street, in Sutherlin.
The speaker for the afternoon serv
ice will be the Rev. Walter A.
Sylwester, pastor of St. Paul's Lu
theran church in Roseburg. Rev.
Richard Graef of Sutherlin will
serve as liturgist and will officiate
at the cornerstone laying ceremony
St. John's church waa started
about two years ago when Pastor
Sylwester began evening services
for fifteen members of the Rose
burg congregation who found it
more convenient to attend in Suth
erlin. In February of this year the
church was incorporated. At the
same time it adopted a constitu
tion and elected officers. In June,
Pastor Graef accepted the call to
Sutherlin. With his arrival the tine
of service was shifted to the morn
ing. Originally services were held
in the Boy Scout hall but are now
held in the American Legion hall.
Plans for a new church were dis
cussed almost from the time when
the first services were held here.
But it waa only lately that condi
tions were such that an actual
building program could be under
taken. During the past few weeks
the pumice block walls of St. John s
have risen to scaffold height.
A specially made sealed contain
er will be placed in the cornerstone
containing a copy of the constitu
tion, early history of the church.

Displaced Persons
Bill Faces Fight
On Senate Floor
WASHINGTON, March 1-WP)
The Senato reached the point of
floor debate Tuesday on the hotly
argued question of changing the
1B48 displaced persons act.
The house passed a bill last
June to open up the law, to admit
more of Europe's refugees to
America in line with recommenda
tions of President Truman. The
measure haa run into delays and
bitter disputes tn the Senate.
A sharply revised version of
the House bill was approved by the
Senate judiciary committee last
month and was made the pending
business in the senate late yes
terday.
A substitute bill, substantially
like the house measure, has been
offered by 18 senators 10 Demo
crats and 8 Republicans.
Five members of the judiciary
committee jave announced their
support of the substitute and two
others have come out in favor of
more liberal legislation than the
committee bill. Together, they con
stitute a majority of the 13-mem-ber
committee.
The opposition to the house bill
is led by Senator McCarran (D
Nev ), chairman of the judiciary
committee, and a prolonged debate
appears to be in prospect. Some
se.iators have guessed the argu
ments will run on for two weeks
or more.
The principal points in dispute
concern the refugees who are to
be classed as displaced persons.
certain priorities for their admis
sion and the administration of the
law.
McCarran has reported whole
sale fraud and inadequate screen
ing in the operation of the pro
gram. His committee recently has
been holding hearings at which sim
ilar charges have been made, most
ly by employes in Germany of
the displaced persons commission.
The present law, expiring June
30, provides for the admission of
205.000 displaced persons into the
United Mates.
Under the committee bill, the
total would be increased to 320,000
p'us 5,000 displaced orphans and
5,000 children adopted by over-
