Stroh, above, i pulpit guest (or the preaching mission at First Methodist church was announced this morning by the pastor,-W. A. MacArthur. The mission is to be gin Wednesday night, March 1 and continue every night except Satur days, through March 12. Meetings will be held in the church sanc tuary at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Stroh comes here from the Southern California area. His home is near Los Angeles, in the Malibu Lake region. He is married and has six children; Part of the mis sion here will be the scheduling of several youth and children's meet ings. A highlight of each evening hour will be special singing by Rev. Mr. Stroh. Mrs. Myrtle Burr will be at the piano each evening to assist in the music, as will the various organists of the church. BRITTAIN SLACK The Industrial club of Fair Oaks will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, March 2 at the club house. There will be an exchange of plants. All members are urged to attend and bring a plant or shrub. Members are also asked to bring material for quilt blocks to start some new quilts as all on hand have been given away to people who have been burned out Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Wright of Portland visited at the borne of Mrs. Ida Slack enroute home from Roseburg. where they had been visiting Mr. Wright's brother, who is confined in the Veterans hos pital. Mrs. Wright will be remem bered by old timers aa Mrs. Ed Lemon, the Lemons were residents of Sutherlin in its early daya and Mr. Lemon was bookkeeper for the Luse Land Development com pany. Mr. and Mrs. George Shamp have rented their ranch west of town and have moved to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Parks east of Sutherlin. Mrs. Shamp, the mother of Mrs. Parks, has been confined to her home for some time by a stroke. She is now able to be up and to get around some. As soon as she is well enough to travel they plan on going to Cali fornia to make their home. Mrs. Susan L. Mathewman and Mrs. Harold Mathewman of Mel rose were Sunday visitors at the nome of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Fraser. Mrs. Harold Mathewman will be remembered by many youngsters aa she taught school in Sutherlin for several years. She is now teach ing at ine new Kiverside school. Sutherlin residents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brauninger and daughter. Barbara; Mr. and Mrs. Lenoir Grubbe and daughter, Ollie; were visitors in Springfield Sunday where they visited with Mr. Grubbe and daughter, Ollie, were and Mrs. Jeff Christian. The Brauningers and the Grubbes vis ited in Eugene with Mr. and Mrs. Toney Sparmblk, counsins of Fred Brauninger and Mrs. Grubbe. T. M. (Tommy) Haines, repre senting the Pacific Stationery com pany of Portland, made several business calls in Sutherlin Friday. The series will be sponsored by the Dr. Ross Food company. The show spotlights the greatest of all animal trainers, Clyde Beaty, who has been connected with the circus life since he was It. By the time he was 18, Clyde had shown such aptitude for work around animals that he was gradually broken in aa a trainer. Since those early days, he has won great fame with his sensational animal acta and is now owner, of his own show, the nationally traveled "Clyde Beatty Circus." This rsdio series will be produced and directed by Walter White Jr., president of Commodore Productions. Scripters are Gibson fox and Herb Purdum. Truman's address keynoting the 1950 American Red Cross fund-raising campaign will hightlight a special Mutual-Don Lee broadcast, which will also feature General George Marshall, Red Ctsss president, tonight (10:30 11:00 p. m ). Henry Fonda will narrate a special documentary, illustrating three Red Cross services: Blood, disaster and veteran benefits. church will also participate. With the great influx in population the Methodist church is planning to assume its share of the respon sibility. Fox, chairman of the Winston home extension unit. motored to Scottsburgh Tuesday Feb. 21 to represent unit No. 17 which was recently organized In this community. Fifteen other la diea were present, representing the same number of units located throughout Douglas county. Mrs. Fox report a very interesting and successful meeting. Mrs. Corrine McTaggart was in charge and spoke on "How to Prepare Food for the Home Freeier, demon. strating on the proper storage of pre-cooked and raw foods. This topic will again be reviewed at the forthcoming meeting of the lo cal Unit at the Winston Community hall on Wednesday afternoon, March 15th at 1:30 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Rhodes left Monday for Eugene, where they boarded a plane bound for Detroit, Mich. They will stop enroute in Chicago then resume their journey by air. In Detroit they will take a bus to Flint, where they expect to buy a new Buick for friends in Roseburg. From there they will motor to Webster and Fredrick, Wise, where the parents of both Mr. and Mrs, Rhodes reside. Driving the new car back they plan to return to their home in Winston about March 10. Rhodes' parenta will accompany them to Oregon for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lane of Rosebung will occupy the Rhodes residence during their absence. Lane is employed by Rhodes who owns a fleet of log ging trucks. . Paul Helweg attended to business interests in this vicinity Thursday. Helweg owns a large commercial orchard here on highway 99, where pruning and farming demonstra tions are often held. Mrs. E. O. Rodgers of Hill Crest auto courts in Roseburg invited rel atives and close friends to call Sun day afternoon in honor of her fa ther's birthday. "Dad" Francis who became 88 Sunday is visiting here from Wasington. Many local and out of town guests called to bring flowers and cards in his hon or. The party was a complete sur prise to Francis and he expressed his "delight and gratitude'' to all those who made his "four score and eighth birthday anniversary" so pleasant Mr. and Mrs. Homer Rhodes of Winston spent Thursday evening in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Leland F. Van Allen of Roseburg. The Van Aliens had just returned from Los Angeles bringing with them what Mrs. Van Allen termed a "double addition" to their family. Little Brenda, aged three, and her younger brother, Dwayne, aged two, have come to live with the Van Aliens and be "sister" and "brother" to their daughter, Sony a. aged eight. Everyone seems very happy with the arrangement. The Van Aliens reside on Elm street in Roseburg and Dr. Van Allen is a dentist with offices on North Stephens street. Mrs. Helen Duncan, accompani ed by Mrs. Webb Hill, made a business trip to Grants Pass Wednesday. Mrs. Duncan is em ployed in the poultry raising busi ness in this community and de livers hatching eggs from blood- tested hens to that city. . Melrose By MRS. NETTIE WOODRUF Mra. Walker of Edenbower is taking care of Mrs. Daisy Ward who is confined to ber bed with paralysis. AI Lang of Callahan Trail dis trict recently came out over the snow, bringing a Caterpillar trac tor to Melrose. He reported many trees had to be -cut on the way. The families in the area came through the heavy anow in fine shape. The Forest service tele phone line, from the foot of the Coast range to Callahan district, is down. A Boy Scout troop was organis ed here Friday evening, led by Ed Reece and Herman Aydelott. Betty Buckwalter and Mrs. Grace Ferm are both reported ill at their homes. V. S.
