First Membership Only Five
The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Crook
organized their church in Roseburg
in December 1945. and have seen
the membership grow from the
first service, held in the K. of P.

attending, to a present membership
of 140, and many others interested
in the work, said Rev. Mr. Crook.
That first attendance of five ner.

There is no justification, there

fcarl J. McGrath, for knowingly
niring teacnera "whose commit

tion principles of freedom itself."
But in his annual report to the
Federal Security administration,
McGrath warned against letting the
effort to keep Communists out of j
the schools lead to thoueht control
and limitations on academic free
dom.
McGrath called for an investiga
tion of the teaching profession to
see why it attracts some people :
wnne repelling others.
He also proposed a vigorous edu
cational campaign "focused direct
ly on problems of international un
derstanding" to help avoid another
war "which would wipe out our
emulation. ,
Additional federal aid to schools
is needed, he said, especially in
the poorer states, to halt what he
described as "deterioration in the
quality of education."
McGrath said a shortage of
teachers and school facilitiea has
brought an emergent crisis which
will mean educational privation to
many oi our cniioren.
A test survey, by bis on ice. be
said, indicates that the cost of
building new schools and replacing
obsolete ones, to accommodate in
creased enroll menu in the .lext
10 years, would be at least $10,

"There is no reason why teacherj
