Cassel's. concert is scheduled
at the junior high auditorium,
starting at 8:15 p. m.-

val, with the Pittsburgh opera,

Manhunt Still On
Investigating authorities have
said they knew the Jewels still
were In France, probably In the
hand of a Corslcan named Paul
Llca. A nationwide manhunt has
been underway for Leca.
The fabulously wealthy Aga
Khan, father-in-law of film star
Rita Hayworth, and his wife the
Begum, were robbed as they
drove away from their Riviera
estate near Cannes.
Four men, armed with tommy
guns, halted their automobile on
the open highway and seized the
Begum's jewelry. The couple was
enroute to Deauville to visit Miss
Hayworth and her husband, Prince
Aly Khan, the Aga Khan's son.
Among those arrested was a
French citizen of British parent
age, George Lindsay Watson,
whom the police described as the
"finger man" in the case. He has
been charged with "complitlcy
in robbery."
The robbers at first had bur
led their loot at a Villa close by
the scene of the holdup at Le
Cannet, near Cannes.
Some of the men now in cus
tody said that for days after the
holdup while police were comb
ing bars and waterfront dives
from the Italian border to Mar
seille the Jewels lay burled in
the garden.

Labor Standards act (federal
wage and hour law) will be ex
plained in detail by a representa

The series, which will be pre
sented by the station at 3:30 p.m.
on the next four Wednesdays, be

charged with the administration
and enforcement of the act, as
amended by Congress, will be

Among the topics he will dis
cuss are: The new 75-cent mini
mum wage: chanees in the meth-
od of computing overtime pay;
coverage under the original act
and the amendments; new and
changed exemptions from the
wage or hour provisions, or both;
child labor; a new definition for
the regular rate of nay; new tests
for determining what retail and
service establishments are ex
empt; the right of the adminis
trator to sue lor back wages; an
nual wage plans: exemptions for
employees of certain logging op
erators, agricultural irrigation
workers, telephone operators,
newsxys, taxlcab drivers, and
others.
North Atlantic Allies
Sign Defense Agreement .

The language of each country's
agreement varies, but the main
commitments are identical.
These provide that all countries
will pool their defense plans to
defend Western Europe against
any attack and that no arms fur
nished them will be turned over
to any other nation "without the
prior consent" of the United
States.
All pledge to "take such se
curity measures as mav be
agreed" to "prevent the disclosure
or compromise of any classified
(secret) military articles, serv
ices or Information."
Spelling out the conditions for
American help was the primary
purpose of the agreements.
But they also pledge that the
United States can get raw and
semi-processed materials from the
eight countries "upon such terms
and conditions as may be agreed
upon."
The signing came about three
months later than the schedule
anticipated when the plan was
worked out.
France Is to get the biggest
chunk of American military help
because in any Russian attack
on western Europe its army
would be expected to hear the
brunt of the initial defense.
Major Terme Listed
While terms of the agreements
were kept secret before the sign
ing officials said in advance that
these are the main provisions:
1. Each country pledges to use
American military help only for
the purposes specified to
strengthen the total defense of
the North Atlantic area.
2. All promise to bolster their
own defenses and to aid other
allies with any weapons and sup
piles deemed necessary. This is
known as the self-help and mu
tual aid provision.
3. No country wll!transfer any
American equipment without pri
or consent of the United States.
4. Strict .security measures will
tie put Into effect to make sure
arms and secret information re
main only in authorized hands.
5. Each government agrees to
pay the expenses of American
military aid missions. About 200
American Army, Navy, Air Force
and Marine officers and govern
ment officials are to be sent over
seas under this program to train
the pact countries in the use and
maintenance ot the arms.
Britain Gets Assurance

Curry Man's Death In
Fire Ruled Accidental

UP) The death' of George Purvis,
83, Chetco river resident, was ac
cidental. That was the verdict of
ur. A. w. Cartwrlght, Curry
county coroner, and Sheriff R. ft.
Sabin. .
Sabln said Purvis nerlshed in
the flames of his house, destroyed
early Wednesday. The fire was
seen for miles, but no body was
discovered and at first it was be
lieved Purvis had escaped.

Ray LaMar Dies "
Of Heart Attack
Ray LaMar. 49. died suddenly
Thursday afternoon after suffer
ing a heart atack while shop
ping in a local store. He was
born Nov. 9, 1900, in West Vir
ginia and lived in California a
number of years before moving
to Roseburg a year and a half
ago to make his home. He was
engaged in the poultry farm In
dustry In Garden Valley at the
time or nis aeatn. He was a mem'
ber of Riversdaie Grange.
Surviving are his widow, Hel
en, Roseburg, and several broth
ers and sisters in West Virginia.
Funeral services will be held
In the Chapel of the Roses,
Roseburg Funeral home, Sat
urday, Jan. 28, at 3 p. m.,
with Dr. Morris Roach officiat
ing. The body will be shipped to
San Francisco for vault inter

GOP Move Fails
When the bill was brought up,
House GOP Leader Martin of
Massachusetts offered an amend
ment proposing a $700,000,000 ex
cise reduction. It would have
halved the 20 percent retail lev
ies on furs, jewelry, luggage and
toilet articles and reduced many
others.
Martin told the House that
while Congress delays action
"there H what might be called
a buyers' strike in the country,
hurting business and causing un
employment." He tailed to get a vote.
Rep. Gore (D-Tenn), presiding
at the time, held that House rules
bar an excise amendment to a
bill dealing only with the corpor
ation income tax section of the
Internal Revenue code.
That was the end of the excise
scrap for the day.
No one -would precict, however,
what might happen when the
House and Senate finally act on
a tax measure.
Mr. Truman, in Monday s tax
message, asked for excise reduc
tions but gave notice he would
veto any bill that did not pick up
the lost revenue. He proposed
plugging the tax loopholes and
adding $1,000,000,000 in revenue
by raising taxes on corporations,
inheritances and big gifts.
Two Men Burn To Death
As Traffic Chase Sequel
CAMBRIDGE. Mass., Jan. 27
UP) Two men burned to death
and a third was burned critically
when their automobile crashed
into a gasoline tank truck during
a mile-a-minute police chase ear
ly today.
The dead were laentmea tent
atively by police as Fred Luongo
of Cambridge and Mark Foster
of Arlington.
The third, man, reported In a
dying condition at Cambridge
City hospital, was identified as
Henry Tivnan, 22, of Cambridge.
Police said thev took up pur
suit of the car in the belief it
was stolen.
They reported it was travel
ing 60 miles an hour when it hit
the tank truck at a street inter
section.
The truck driver lumped from
the vehicle uninjured.

NEW POLIO CASES
PORTLAND, Jan. 27 UP)
Five more cases of infantile pa
ralysis occurred in Oregon last
week, the State Board of Health
said.
The total polio cases in 1949
were 325, including 23 fatal cases.
So far this year 11 persons have
fallen ill with the disease.

Found Slain In Auto

The sheriff's office today held one
man and hunted another in con
nection with the apparent slaying
of an Anchorage, Alaska, and
Portland, Ore., civil engineer.
Robert E. Turner, about aa, was
found collapsed over the wheel
of his automobile bv Deputy
Sheriff Emmett Newland yester
day morning. The ear had been
driven to the side Oi highway 84
near Rlllito.
Turner had been shot through
the right temple and Instantly
killed. A new .38 caliber revolver
was on his lap. Officers believe
the bullet that killed Turner was
the first ever fired from the

Turner's hands were relaxed
over the steering wheel. A pocket
book was lying on the floor of
the ear. It contained Turner's
identification ' papers but no
money. About $30 in cash was in
the man's pocket and his watch

New Snow Keeps Three (
Major Highways Closed
SALEM, Jan. 27 UP Snow
covered most Oregon - highways
today and the 'State Highway
commission advised motorists to
use chains.
The Columbia River highway
was still closed between Hood
river, and Cascade locks. The
coast highway was blocked 13
miles south of Port Orford, and
the Siuslaw highway was closed
eight miles east of Florence.
The snowfall was very heavy
in the Cascades, with Santiam
pass having the biggest, 34 inches
in 24 hours.
