Roseburg Lions club and gover
nor of District 36E, last Sunday
was elected second vice-president
of the board of governors of
Lions Districts 19 and 36, at the
midwinter conference held , at
Wenatchee, Wash.
Delegates were present from
the two districts, which embrace
Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Mon
tana and Western Canada, said
Losee, who returned to Roseburg
Tuesday. Ho said there are about
38 district governors in the area.
Losee left Wednesday of last
week by train, and was joined en
route by past District Governor
Larry Neeley, Medford; District
Governor Frank White of Gardi-ner-Reedsport
Lions and District
Governor Floyd South of Port
land. The conference opened Jan. 20
and continued through Sunday.
The principal purpose was to for
mulate plans lor the Lions Inter
national convention, including
housing and transportation for
Pacific Northwest area delegates
at Chicago. July 16 to 20. inclu
sive.
Tuesday night Losee, accom
panied by his wife, attended as
fovernor the Ashland Lions in
uction of 17 new members. Ash
land, chartered in 1938, had seven
of its 11 past presidents present.
The district governor will go to
Medford Saturday night for a
governors' meeting, and on Sun
day at 10 a. m., will preside over
a general meeting of the state
council, to formulate plans for
the state convention in that city
June 11, 12 and 13.

ARCADIA, Calif., Jan. 27 (m
citation, for only the third time
in 31 starts, has come off the
turf second best.
Citation's return was marred
yesterday by Miche, an unherald
ed little gray horse from the Ar
gentine. The small one. ienorlnor the
greatness of his rival, outgamed
Citation and whipped him by a
neck in a six-furlong thriller at
aama Anna parK.
The race was Citation's second
trip to the post aiter a 13-month
layoff due to leg injury, and it
was a tune-up lor the Calumet
Cannon-ball for the $50,000 San
Antonio handicap Feb. 11 and the
$100,000 Santa Anita handicap
Feb. 25.
It was a full-scale race for
Miche, however, as he took Ci
tation's measure in 1:10 4-5. The
winner paid $30.20. Citation was
1-4.
The distance favored Miche, a
sprinter, and his 114 -pound
weight assignment couldn't be
compared to Citation's 130-pound
package.

machinery for stopping a coal
strike. If no agreement was
reached this weekend to restore
production by Lewis' miners. '
The operators had broken off
contract negotiations during the
strike Lewis called in October.
Since then the mine owners
sought a court Injunction against
Lewis' three-day work week, say
ing Lewis refused to bargain in
good faith and 'vas v.lng the
short week to coerce tiiem into
an illegal contract. A hearing on
that is scheduled next Wednes
day. Lewis would re-open nego
tiations at the same hour.
The coincidence of timing could
be due to plans for Lewis to bul
wark any denial that he has not
been willing to bargain in good
faith.

that miners who have been ob
serving a "no day week" might
decide to go back to work lor at
least three days a week now that
negotiations are in prospect.
On Capital Hill, a Republican-
sponsored resolution calling on
President Truman to use the
Taft-Hartley emergency machin
ery came up for a vote in the
Senate Labor committee.
The Democratic senators mak
ing up a committee majority
made clear in advance they
would vote against it meaning
they were opposed to forcing the
V resident into the dispute before
hi was ready to come in.
