In Battalion Tests
WITH THE EIGHTH U. S.
ARMY IN KOIUMI, Japan.
Private Charles C. Bowman, son
of Mrs. Bessie Bowman, who re
sides at 843 Templin street, Rose
burg, Ore., was among the per
sonnel to participate in the bat
talion tests given by the IX corps
testing team at Camp Weir,
Japan. The purpose of the tests
was to oetermine tne anility or
the battalion to operate together
as a unit. The men were scored on
speed and efficiency.

Japan, Private Bowman is as
signed to the radio section of
Headquarters battery, 61st Field
Artillery battalion, 1st cavalry di
vision. He participated in the tests
as vehicle driver and radio oper
ator. The communications section,
of which the radio section is a
part, was individually compli
mented on their ability by the IX
corps officers.
private Bowman was married
to Miss Jane Stout shortly before
entering the service. They have
one child. Private Bowman plans
to go into the lumbering business
upon completion of his military
service.

He is slated to appear Wednes
day, Feb. 1, at Junior high school
auditorium, starting at 8:15 p.m.
Cassel is one of a selected few
native-born artists who received
all of their musical education and
subsequent artistic recognition in
this country.
Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
and educated in Omaha, Cassel
in his singing reflects the
strength and vigor of America's
great Midwestern background.
His musical career dates back to
the day when he received a trum
pet as a birthday gift Encouraged
by the many contests he won with
his trumpet with his school band
In Council Bluffs, Cassel might
have realized his childhood
dream had he not also joined the
glee club In his last years at
school and discovered an even
greater talent singing. He enter
ed the Iowa state contest and
won first prize. i
After several years of work,
with singing as his main objec
tive, Cassel received his first real
impetus in 1933, when he met
and sang lor Lawrence Tlbbett,
then appearing in a concert in
Omaha. Tibbett praised Cassel's
renditions and urged the talented
young baritone to even more in
tensive study to perfect his voice.
A year later he went to New
York, where he made his first
radio appearance. His rise to
fame in the entertainment field
was rapid from that day on.

sited recently with relatives in
Seattle.
Telephone and electric servic
es are almost non-existant in the
ELKTON AREA. Repair' crews
are at work constantly trying to
keep the lines open in the face
of some of the worst storms this
area has ever seen. Schools have
been closed and social activities
have been held to a minimum.
School was held Monday, Jan.
23, but was closed again Tuesday
on account of the lack of power.
Called home on account of the
last illness and death of their
brother, Robert M. Smith, were
Mrs. Morris Kesler and children,
Pamala and Carolyn, of Sa n
Francisco, Mrs. Tony Cocciola of
Colma, Calif, and Mr. and Mrs.
