Here and There
Toole of conversation for the
week has been "what kind of
stove do you have" and the fact
that the modern generation is
dependent, almost entirely, up
on electricity.
Undaunted by power failure.
however, a group of friends sur
prised Story lies on his birthday
Tuesday evening. The lies are
long-time residents of Roseburg,
since 1910 to be exact.
With flashlight in hand and
three candles gleaming in the
lies living room Story received
a floorlamp from his friends
for his den. Daughter in law
Olive lies baked a birthday cake
for the event Tuesday morning
between spurts of oower.
Bellview club members observ
ed their 30th anniversary Wednes
day afternoon despite the fact it
was cold outside. Daffodils
brought a touch of far-away
spring into the room and the
warm friendship radiating be
tween the members cancelled all
thoughts of snow, ice or cold
winds.
The afternoon was devoted to
a program during which time
members related an incident
during their membership. Mem
ories recalled everything from
food to clothes. Lora Kester, first
president of the club, is capably
leaning the ladles in another suc
cessful year. Talisman rosebuds
were pinned on her shoulder.
Serious side of the program
was lighting candles for depart
ed member and many a tear
was quietly shed for the friends
who are no longer here.
Five orchids for the five char
ter members were expertly fash
ioned by the clever fingers of
Geneva Elliott and encircled the
centerpiece. Honored at this af
fair were the charter members
who have remained active in the
club since 1920. For the benefit
of the public the Bellview mem
bers subscribe to the polio, can
cer and Red Cross drives, care
for the needy In their own com
munity and contribute to the so
cial life of the members at a
meeting once a month.
