Jersey City Mat Artist
Amazes Northwest Fans
Douglas county wrestling fans will see something new under
the sun of the mat sport when Ted Bell of Jersey City makes
his local debut. He meets Al Szasz in the one-hour preliminary
' at the Roscburg armory Saturday.
Bell Is an easterner who has literally taken the Northwest by
storm and in his short stay of several weeks has amazed wrestling
fans with his style and newness of his maneuvers. In recent
appearances In Salem and Albany, Bell has won "battle royal"
' victories, the toughest of mat tests.
Matchmaker Elton Owen, says,
"This boy is by far and away
the greatest erappler to come
here during the past two years
a combination ot Anay lruman
and Rene LaBelle, who. are well
known to local mat followers.
Appeared At Garden
Bell, who Just recently was
credited with "stealing the show"
before 18.000 fans in Madison
Square Garden, also uses the
"iron cross", along with new
holds like the backward body
drop and rolling keylock and
claims he has some holds he
hasn't even shown to date In the
Northwest.
Bell's Initial test here will be
the toughest against Szasz.
Szasz's reason for taking a pre-
llminary bout Is to have a chance
to watch Maurice LaChappelle
and Leo Wallick work. The head
liners on Saturday's card will
meet for the right to challenge
Szasz for his coast junior heavy
weight championship.
LaChappelle Declined
LaChappelle, the great French
grappler, was scheduled to get a
crack at Szasz after his impres
sive victory over Georges Dusefr
te last week, but declined the
match when Wallick said that he
(LaChaflelle) was yellow and
wouldn't meet him for a chance
at the crown. Wallick, following
a victory over George Strick
land here last week and armed
with a victorious tilt in a recent
"battle royal", claimed that he
had as much right as LaChap
pelle to a championship match.
The fireworks will be colorful
and explosive when the two men
meet Wallick matching his dam
aging and dangerous piledriver
against LaChappelle's head-snap
per, nangman 8 noia ana comni
nation deathlock surfboard.
Quite a few local fans believe
that the Detroit piledriver has an
even chance.
The Bell-Szasz opener gets un
der way at 8:30 p.m., and Owen
said he will have an outside ref
eree handle both bouts.
