Christmas Spirit
Comes To Town
In Poverty's Grip
SHALLMAR, Md., Dec. 24. UP)
The spirit of Christmas burned
ongntiy in tnis little mountain
town today.
And it is spreading to other
poverty-stricken communities of
tne mountain area.
All but a few of Shallmar's 200
residents were utterly destitute
a lew weeks ago.
There had been no work In the
community since its only mine
closed down in March for lack of
orders.
Thin, scantily clad children be
came faint in school for lack of
food. Some families had subsisted
for weeks on a diet made up
maimy oi potatoes ana apples.
Then the plight of the town and
its 80 children leaked into the
outside world.
Soon trucks loaded with food
and clothing started bumping
tneir way over the narrow mourv
tain road to Shalimar. The pack
ages were sent from all sections
oi the country.
Hundreds of toys arrived and
the mails brought letters from
eacn oi the 48 states. Many con
tained a coin or a cnecK. More
than $3,000 Is on hand now.
It will be used to assure hot
lunches lor the children.
In all six and one-half tons of
clothing and foodstuffs have been
sent to Shalimar.
That would have been enough
to carry the community for a
long time.
But Christmas is coming and
many families of nearby Mary
land and West Virginia communi
ties have been facing a cheerless
Yule.
So Shalimar is dividing its gifts
with less fortunate neighbors.
Seventy neighboring families
have received Shalimar food bas
kets In the last day or two. The
children of 30 families have been
clothed from Shalimar stocks.
Many toys are being repaired
by the men of the town. They will
be sent to mountain homes were
Christmas stockings would have
been empty.
Shalimar has given so much
that there is just enough food left
for the weekend.
But this is a big weekend. The
folks here are glad they have
had a chance to spread the spirit
of Christmas.
