Washington State Law To
Curb Union Picketing Will
Be Reviewed By High Court
WASHINGTON, : Dec : 20. OR The ' Supreme court Monday
agreed to consider a three-way attack on Washington State law
which curbs union picketing activity. . 'r
. The unions claim this violates the free speech guarantees of the
ages appealed to the tribunal in an effort to upset the law's ban
against picketing when there is no Immediate employer-employee

In one of the three cases which ;
the court agreed to review for
later decision, a Bremerton,
Wash., local of the building terv
lce employes international union
was ordered to pay W. L. Gaz
zam, owner of the Enetal Inn,
$500.
The State supreme court, In up
holding the damaee award, found
that none of Gazzam's workers
was a member of the oicketing
union and none had expressed a
desire to join the union.
The state court held that the
organizing drive which prompt

effort to compel the hotel owner
to ask his men to join the union.
Issues In Other Cases
In the second case tne inter

pealed a $250 damage award. It
was assessed when the local was
prohibited by a county court from

sons.
The firm, doing business as
"Atlas Auto Rebuild," operates
without hired help. '
The union said 115 other used
car dealers in Seattle were bound
by a collective bargaining agree
ment to close their places at 6
p.m. and to keep them closed
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
A picket was placed at the Han
kes' place to persuade them to
observe the same hours.
The third case involved Seattle
local No. 882 of the AFL Auto
mobile drivers and demonstrators.
. The union was ' enjoined ' by
court order from picketing the
used car business of George E.
Cline in a similar effort to force
him to observe hours set by other
dealers. Cline operates the nusi
ness himself ..and has .no other
salesmen. - .
