ceased. Skilled Workers
Are Available In
Roseburg Area
Skilled and qualified workers
In nearly every line are available
in the Roseburg area in greater
number than at any time since
the end of the war, according to
George Foster, manager of the
local office of the Oregon State
Employment service. . i
Jobs not only are hard to find
for seasonal employes laid off
during the winter months but
also for mechanics, mill men,
building trades ' workers and
many others. Home owners and
employers with part-time work
should exert every effort to pro
vide employment during the next
three months until spring activity
begins. f
"The population of this area,
just like other sections of Ore
gon, has been increasing rapid
ly," commented Foster. "Possib
ly we can't find work for every
one of the newcomers and otliT
ers who need a regular income,
but we should provide for out;
steady, skilled workers who are
a part of this community.
Our office has applications
from hundreds of experienced
men and women who are able
and willing to tackle anything.
Many jobs need to be done let s
lose no time in putting these peo
ple to work It will save money
for all of us." '
While stressslng that the State
Employment service is not- a re
lief agency, Manager Foster did
point out that unless jobs arc
found for family heads and other
able workers, welfare expendi
tures will increase greatly. Un
employment compensation for
those with 1948 earnings are lim
ited in time and amount, and can
provide only the bare necessities
of existence for most families,
it was pointed out.
Minors Fined For
Violating Phase
Of Liquor Law
Twenty five dollar fines last
week were meted to two Doug
las county youths under a new
Oregon law Instituted this year
to curb the sale of alcoholic
beverages to minors, Justice of
the Peace A. J. Geddes reported.
Chapter 592, section one. of the
1949 law states that for the pur
pose of preventing minors from
illegally securing alcoholic liquor
by falsely stating their age,
all licensees and permittees
of the Oregon Liquor Control
commission shall require such
person to make a written state
ment of age and furnish other
evidence of age and Identity.
The law requires that he state
ment of age be signed before
any selling or serving of alcoholic
liquor can be made to any per
son about whom there is reason
able doubt of having reached the
age of majority.
Section' three of the law says
it is unlawful for any person lo
make a statement of age that is
false in whole or in part, or to
produce evidence that would
falsely indicate his or her age.
Persons violating any provis
ion of the act are subject to a
fine up to J250, or confinement
within the county Jail up to three
months, or both, the law reads.
The certificates have been dis
tributed to all dispensers of al
coholic beverages within the
state and includes such questions
as date of birth, Information re
garding driver's license, social
security number, selective ser
vice registration card and Ore
gon liquor purchase permit.
The purchaser must sign the
certificate, which must be wit
nessed by some one other than
the licensee or permittee. A de
scription of the purchaser is also
part of the questions to be an
swered on the certificate.
The fining of the two youths,
one living in Roseburg and the
other in Myrtle Creek, both 19,
marked the first time the certif
icates were used in the county
to bring convictions, Geddes said.
Although asbestos is known to
have been used many centuries
ago, there were no asbestos
mines In operation until about
