From the opening notes of the overture to the echoing remains of the chorus "Hallelujah," the ca pacity crowd was captured com- Eletely by 50 voices of the Rose urg Choral society, led by Di rector Charles A. Ricketts. Half-a-hundred townsfolk, many i with little background in music ! but with a great desire to sing, provided their listeners with a little touch of the true Christmas spirit. The imagination was stirred as Christ's biography was told in song by the chorus and nine solo ists. After the overture, Wendell A. Johnson, tenor, reported "Every Valley Shall Be Exalted" with sureness and clarity. Don Castel, bass, handled a seemingly difficult number, "But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming?" in a manner that in dicated much preparation. Then Marion Ross bravely attempted to reach the far corners of the auditorium with "Behold! A ir gin Shall Conceive" in her light, contralto voice. Mrs. Ross re ceived able assistance from Mar tha Jane Plimpton at the piano. Both Mrs. Plimpton and Es ther Geddes, the latter at the or gan, helped balance off the vocal portion of the program with in strumental introductions and ac companiment. Herschel D. Scott displayed his versatility by first rendering "For Behold, Darkness Shall Cov er The Earth," accompanied by the organist, then walking across the stage and in his deep, rich bass voice sang "The People That Walked in Darkness," aid ed by Mrs. Plimpton. Part one of "The Messiah" was brought to an end with solos by Helen Bamford, Lois Rich and Marion Jones, punctuated with a stirring "Glory to God" by the chorus. Part two was opened with two at the Legion home, 118 S. Kane street. I fsnsm I Don't Wait to Give Her a IANE Come in Now!
