Boy Looks For Christmas
Tree, Finds Stolen Safe
A small boy looking for a
Christmas tree in the woods
south of Elkton Saturday eve
ning discovered something
much more valuable to the
owners at least State Police
Sgt. Holly Holcomb reports.
The boy. whose name was
not learned, came across an
abandoned safe and promtly
reported his find to State Po
lice officers. Investigating offi
cers recovered the safe plus
$400 In checks, reported stolen
from the Oregon Food center,
Coos Bay, Dec. 14, Sgt. Hol
comb said. The checks were re
turned to their rightful owner.
RAILWAY TO QUIT
BALTIMORE W One of
the nation's oldest electric -ail-ways
is gently giving up the
ghost. For 69 years, the Balti
more and Annapolis railroad has
shuttled between the two cities,
about 25 miles apart.
But the roadbed deteriorated,
the rolling stock gradually be
came a laughing stock, with the
newest passenger car a trifling
36 years old. Finally the Mary
land Public Service commission,
which has wrestled long and anx
iously with B. and A. problems
(mostly financial) authorized it
to abandon rail passenger serv
ice and switch to busses on New
Year's day.

ELKS SHOW SUCCESS The second annual Elks lodge home
falent charity minstrel show proved successful this year both
for the spectators' and for the Elks' enriched charity fund,
according to Ceneral Chairman Harry Pinniger. An estimated
3,000 persons witnessed the show during its three-day presenta
tion. Pinniger said the profits realized will permit the Elks to

S. S. Smiley, 49,
Dies At Reedsport
Sherman Spencer Smiley, 49,
Reedsport, died at his home Sun
day afternoon, Dec. 18, after a
long illness with a heart aliment.
Mr. Smiley was born Oct. 10,
1900, at the family ranch 14 miles
from Gardiner, and had lived in
this community all his life.
He attended grade school in
Gardiner and Five Mile, and high
school in Marshfield. He was
married lo Evangeline Kendall
June 20, 1921, at Jamleson, Ore.
He came to Reedsport that year
and worked as a tallyman at
Johnson's Lumber mill. A few
years later he bought a fishing
and marine supply business from
Nelson Hogan, then located in
the Fred Varrelman building. La
ter he moved this business to tiie
present location at the Standard
Oil dock as marine agent for the
Standard Oil company of Cali
fornia. Survivors include the widow.
Evangeline; a son, Robert: two
daughters, Mrs. -Gordon Duna
way and Mrs. Fred Dickson; two
adopted daughters, Rada Lockett
and Milan Lockett, all of Reeds
port; a sister, Mrs. C. E. Caud
ill, Reedsport; three brothers,
Mailland of North Bend, Wallace
of Reedsport, and Norman of
Portland, and three grandchil
dren. A son, Wayne, died in 1948.
Mr. Smiley was a life member
and past master of Aurora lodge
No. 59, A.F. & A.M., life member
and past high priest of Aurora
chapter No. 49, R.A.M., a mem
ber of Occidental council No. 12,

both of Coos Bay. He belongej

Thursday, Dec. 22, at 1 p.m. from
