Level Of Economy Will Remain Near
1949 Level For Pacific Northwest
SEATTLE (ffWThe consensus
of contributors to the December
Issue of the Pacific Northwest In
dustry Is that the region's econ
omy for 1950 "should remain
close to :the 1949 level." .
The publication is Issued by the
Bureau of Business Research at
the University of Washington;
The .economic reports and
forecasts cover Washington, Or
egon, Idaho, British Columbia
and Western Montana. They were
by five campus economists, eight
chamber of commerce represen
tatives and one editor.
In summarizing their forecasts
for a prosperous 1950, tempered
by some uneasiness and unfavor
able aspects, Editor Charles J.
Miller wrote.-
"The reasoning behind th!s
composite conclusion is sound:
construction is expected to be
maintained at high levels, as arc
production of lumber and alumi
num; "Farm income will be protect
ed by the federal government;
"Veterans will receive substan
tial cash payments In the form of .

consumers will stop buying or In
dustry and business will retrench
on plans for expansion, research
and aggressive promotion be
cause of over-vivid imaginations
stimulated by timidity. Both
groups have money to-spend.1
"Three new area problems ap
peared In 1949 (1) A mode:
upturn in unemployment;
(2) Devaluation of currency by
some 30 nations; and (3) Area
defense and decentralization tf
defense industries. - - -
"The former is not yet of con
cern but the latter two have caus
ed some serious maladjustment,
with the longer-term effects hot
clearly foreseeable. 1
"Prices of farm products con
tinue downward, but federal mon
ey will prevent hardship in that
area.
"The power shortage remains
critical and prevents unlimited
industrial expansion." , ,
He cited the steadily falling
Boeing Aircraft payroll as a ma
jor problem' in the Seattle- area,
but expressed the opinion that
for the region "national prob
lems loom more Important" than
local ones.
